Gerald "Jerry" Schmidt Obituary
Gerald "Jerry" Lester Schmidt, 81, of Quincy, passed away at 9:18 am Sunday, August 10, 202,5 at his home in Quincy, IL.
Gerald "Jerry" was born October 31, 1943, in Quincy, IL to Winfred and Virginia (Power) Schmidt. He was married to Sandra Moeller on August 28, 1979, at Central Baptist Church in Quincy, IL. She survives.
Other survivors include his three children, Michelle Watzig (David) of Overland Park, KS, Jennifer Girup (Jack) of Athens, IL, and Jeffrey A. Schmidt of Chatham, IL; three grandchildren, Rebekah Erickson (Richard), Nichole Watzig, and James J. Girup; one great-grandchild, Ryker Erickson; and one sister in-law, Sharon Moeller.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother in-law, Gary Moeller.
A proud graduate of Quincy Senior High in 1961, Jerry went on to serve his country with distinction in the Army National Guard from 1964 to 1970. He dedicated 30 years to the Quincy Public Schools as a maintenance worker before retiring in 1991. His work ethic was unmatched, and even after retirement, he continued to serve his community, working for Gem City Ford driving cars and also ran his own car detail business from his home.
Jerry's interests were as varied as they were passionate. His love for sprint car racing was evident, as he made it a tradition to travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma for 12 consecutive years to witness the Chili Bowl, a premier event in the sport. Jerry's adventurous spirit also took him to destinations far and wide, from Paris, CA, Branson, Tulsa, and even Alaska on a memorable cruise.
Farming was more than just a hobby for Jerry; it was part of his heritage. He was deeply connected to the family-owned farms in Ewing, MO, where he found solace and purpose. A true car enthusiast, Jerry's love for automobiles was only matched by his loyalty to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Known as the "Mayor of Wilmar" to his family for his outgoing nature and the genuine care he showed for his neighbors, Jerry was a fixture in his community. His dedication to his family was unwavering, and his sense of humor brought laughter and light into their lives. Jerry never met a stranger, and his ability to make friends wherever he went was one of his most endearing qualities.
Jerry Schmidt's legacy is one of love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the many lives he touched.
A Graveside Service will be at 10:00 am Friday, August 15, 2025, at Quincy Memorial Park in Quincy, IL. Pastor Keith Ehresman will officiate.
