Claire Hubley Obituary

Claire Marjorie (Wardwell) Hubley, a resident of East Hampstead, NH, passed away on May 15, 2025. She was born on September 2, 1924, in Winthrop, MA, daughter of Clarence M. and Zemira A. (Paine) Wardwell. She came to Haverhill at the age of 10 and attended Haverhill Public Schools, graduating from Haverhill High School, Class of 1942. After graduating, she worked for the former Ben Franklin store and Western Electric Co. in Haverhill. She taught piano for many years and decided to further her musical interests by taking organ lessons. She attended the Leveille School of Music in Lawrence, MA; The Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA; and Colby College in Waterville, ME. She was a former Trustee of The Methuen Memorial Music Hall, and a former Dean of the Merrimack Valley Chapter, American Guild of Organists. She holds the Service Playing Certificate from the Guild. She was an organist at the H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Home for 28 years, and many churches in the area, including the Hampstead Congregational Church in Hampstead, NH. She was a member of the Hampstead Congregational Church, the DAR, Friends of the Hampstead Library, Leisure Hour Club, Women's City Club of Haverhill, Essex Society of Genealogists, and the New England Historic and Genealogical Society of Boston. With her husband she published the book "The Descendants of Nathaniel Brickett of Newbury, Massachusetts." She was a volunteer at the Special Collections room of the Haverhill Public Library for 25 years and was a volunteer at the New Hampshire Vital Records in Concord, NH. In April 2004, she was nominated by the Haverhill Public Library for the YWCA "Tribute to Women Award." She was the widow of Richard E. Hubley, who she married on April 14, 1946, and was married for 66 years before his death in August 2012. She is survived by a daughter, Dale L. Clayton of East Hampstead, NH, with whom she resided; 4 grandchildren - Robert E. Lane, Danielle A. (Lane) Solari and her husband Andrew, Erin E. (Clayton) Stephens and her husband Jason, and Charles A. Clayton and his wife Lauren Salk, 5 great grandchildren - Sofia, Arabella, and Stone Solari, Samuel Stephens, and Oscar Clayton. Also, her great niece Kathleen Beauregard, her Irish daughter Margaret O'Sullivan, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She is predeceased by her parents, her sisters Rena F. Wardwell and Helen E. (Wardwell) St. John, and son-in-law John (Jack) Clayton. A Memorial service will be held at the Hampstead Congregational Church, 61 Main Street Hampstead, NH 03841 on May 22 at 10:00AM. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem, NH.
