Melpomene (Kitsos) Roumeliotis, age 92, of Haverhill passed away February 6, 2025 at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.
She was born in Skalohori, Lesvos, Greece on August 15, 1932, daughter of the late Emmanuel and Stella (Hatzispirou) Kitsos. Educated in Greece, she came to the US in 1969.
Melpomene was a member of the Holy Apostles Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Haverhill.
She was the beloved wife of the late Dimitrios Roumeliotis, who passed away in 1996. Melpomene and Dimitrios met beneath an olive tree in Skalohori, a fitting scene to forever unite them given the olive tree's symbolism of stability, tranquility, and its deeply rooted significance in Greek tradition. Her love for Dimitrios and the special bond that they shared remained unwavering, his memory everlasting in her stories of him.
Melpomene was incredibly intelligent and a well of wisdom, often parting her knowledge and traditional Greek sayings whose meanings still hold truth to this day. Her stories of childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood showcased the hardships that she overcame to ensure a life better lived by her children and grandchildren. She was sharp with an uncanny memory and witty sense of humor; she never forgot a birthday or an important detail, and she could easily cite how many days had passed since her last phone call. Melpomene had a love for Greek cooking, Greek coffee and tsai, sharing her recipes and knowledge with all willing to watch and learn from her mastery. She possessed exquisite knitting skills, producing countless scarves, hats, gloves, and various home goods galore; each stitch made with love to forever be cherished by its wearer. Perhaps most importantly, Melpomene exemplified unconditional love, ensuring all fortunate to have spent time with her were taken care of.
Her survivors include her two children Evangelos D. Roumeliotis and his wife Vasilia of Scarborough, Maine; Maria N. (Roumeliotis) Avramides and her husband Konstandinos of Dartmouth, MA; her siblings Ignatios Kitsos and his wife Despina of Bradford, Tony Kitsos and his wife Kim, Byron Kitsos and his wife Pamela and Peter Kitsos and his wife Beth all of Haverhill; her grandchildren Alexis and her husband Lee Bradshaw, Litza Roumeliotis, Dimitri Roumeliotis, Sophia Avramides, Georgios Avramides and his wife Kelly Youngstrom, and Demitra Avramides; her great grandchild Rhodes Bradshaw; as well as several nieces and nephews.
