Helen Roumeliotis, 99, of Haverhill, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at Hannah Duston
Healthcare Center in Haverhill surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born in Haverhill on October 17, 1923, daughter of the late Paraskevas and Olga
(Gabriel) Handakas.
Helen was educated in the Haverhill School system and graduated from Haverhill High School
with the Class of 1941. She attended the Fazio Beauty School upon graduation. She owned and
operated two salons, in Lawrence and Hampton Beach and worked at her family's salon,
Flossie's on Locust St. in Haverhill.
She has been a lifelong member of Holy Apostles Church, and was a member of the GAPA and The
Ladies Philoptochos Society in her younger years. Helen enjoyed spending her time and sharing
stories of the past with her family and friends. She was an avid reader, completed countless
crossword puzzles and would challenge you to a good card game. Her love for cooking delicious
Greek meals and pastries extended beyond family and friends to her neighbors of South Webster
St.
Helen is predeceased by her husband the late Nicholas Roumeliotis who passed away in 1988,
her daughter, the late Olga Broyer, her son-in-law the late Kenneth Belmer and her siblings:
sister-in-law the late Vasiliki Handakas, sister Stella and brother-in-law Frank Valentino, sister
Lucy Karis and brother-in-law Dr. Charles Karis, sister Flossie and brother-in-law Strates Frangulas.
She is survived by her daughter Priscilla Belmer of Haverhill and son in law Thomas Broyer of
FI. Brother: Paul Handakas of
Baltimore, MD. Sisters: Chrysoula "Goldy" Panacopoulos of
Haverhill, Thelma Savvas and her husband Michael of Haverhill. She also leaves behind many
nieces and nephews who will miss her tremendously. She was the loving grandmother to
Nicholas Belmer and fiancée Robin Harriman. Shayne Broyer and fiancée Kelly, Cecelia Broyer
and fiancée Jesse, Joanne Belmer and husband Anthony, Laura Viveiros and husband Al, Eleni
Spada and her husband Michael. Great grandchildren: Matthew Tragiou and fiancée Brianna,
Thomas, AJ, Giovanni, Dominic, Jeremy, Gabriella, Hope Madi and Konner. Great
grandchildren: Aaliyah and Jackson.
Helen held a special place in her heart for her neighbor and friend Vicki Damphousse as well as
Cole and Adam who would visit her and make her smile. Mabel who helped Helen remain in her
home until she was 97 years old.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her calling hours on Thursday, May 4'
from 11-12:00 noon in the Holy Apostle Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 156 Winter St.,
Haverhill, followed by a funeral service at 12:15PM. Interment will follow in Linwood
Cemetery, Haverhill. Arrangements by the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, Haverhill-
Bradford.
Contributions can be made to the Labarum (Lavaro) fund.
The holy lavaro will be purchased in memory of the Handakas family. The lavaro will be
donated to Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox church to retire the original lavaro purchased in 1965
by Olga Handakas in memory of her beloved husband Paraskevas Handakas.
Cathy and Gabrielle would like to thank the staff at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital and Hannah
Duston for the care provided to "Auntie" Helen over the past five years. She always said going
to Whittier was like a vacation and looked forward to seeing Dr. Liguori and her therapists:
Karen, Laurie and Joyce. Constellation Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion.
