Alvera Julia Bardon, age 101, of Quincy, of Casita Catherine, 1510 N. 10th Street, died on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at 12:32 am in her home.
Alvera was born September 23, 1920, at St. Mary Hospital in Quincy, Illinois the daughter of Theodore and Julia Bickhaus Stegeman. On February 28, 1942, she married Harold Fred Bardon in the St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church Parsonage with Father Thomas A. Rust officiating. Harold preceded her in death on February 7, 2009.
Alvera graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1939 and was a graduate of Frances Academy in 1940. In her younger years, she operated a Beauty Shop in her home. She worked with her husband when he opened his business, Bardon Body Shop, sanding down cars, taping them up for paint jobs, and were especially talented at mixing and matching paint colors back in the 1950's.
Alvera was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church, Ladies of St. Francis, North Side Boat Club Ladies, and the Triple Oaks Auxiliary. Alvera loved her volunteer times with the former St. Vincent's Nursing Home, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP), and St. Francis Food Pantry. During the pandemic, Alvera packaged over 1,000 masks for school children as a part of the Kiwanis Mask Up project in Quincy.
Alvera loved her flower and vegetable garden, and she loved to have fun bowling, playing cards and games, sewing and making craft items. She was especially proud to have made quilts for each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with many special crafts.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Bockhaus and Nancy (Tom) Friye, both of Quincy; five grandchildren, David (Laurie) Bockhaus of San Leandro, CA, Cathy (Brandon) Bockhaus Towl of University City, MO, Todd (Dee) Friye, Travis (Pam) Friye, and Trevor (April) Friye, all of Quincy; 10 great grandchildren, Larissa Bockhaus of San Leandro, CA, Austin Friye of Lima, IL, Logan Friye of Quincy, Noah Friye of Leland, NC, Jonah and Joshua Friye, both of Quincy, Hayden and Harper Towl, both of University City, MO, and Kale and Easton Friye, both of Quincy; a sister-in-law, Jane Stegeman of Belle Vista, AR; and special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son Bruce Harold Bardon, who was killed in action in Vietnam; three sisters, Myrtle (John) Awerkamp, Ruth (Larry) Liesen, and Florence (Jack) Ulrich; three brothers, Ralph (Ruth) Stegeman, Elmo Stegeman, and Norbert Stegeman; a special son-in-law Roger Bockhaus; two brothers-in-law, Arthur (Buddy) Bardon and Leroy (Florence) Bardon; four sisters-in-law, Norma Bardon, Larina (Arthur) Meyer, Hazel (Marvin) Oster, and Renetta (Richard) Arms.
Alvera's family would like to thank the staff at Casita Catherine for their loving care, especially Martha, Missy, Sara, Rena and Miracle.
Visitation: 4:00 to 6:00 p.m on Monday, June 13, 2022, at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with a 6:00 pm Rosary Service conducted by the Legion of Mary.
Services: 9:30 am prayers on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church with Rev. David Beagles officiating.
Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois
