Christine Kay "Chris" "Crickie" Haffner Higgins, 77, of The Woodlands, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on the morning of December 7, 2020. Christine was born March 30, 1943 in Quincy, Illinois to James E. Haffner, DDS (Doc) and Ernestine Apel Haffner (Ernie), who both preceded her in death.
Chris is survived by her son James Higgins and his wife Rheamy of Conroe, Texas; daughter Michelle (Chelle) Yetman of Davis, California; and daughter Christie Higgins of Cypress, Texas; grandchildren Kendall and Haley Higgins, Ryan Yetman, Quincy Brasher, Wade and Ethan Brasher; cousin Suzanne Irwin-Wells of Quincy, Illinois; and fur-babies Spooks, Pie, and Rum-Tum.
Chris was raised in Quincy, Ill. by her parents who both adored their only child. "Crickie" was initially a term of endearment from her father, and later was adopted as a nickname. A daddy's girl, Crickie loved being by her dad's side at his restaurant, Doc's Airpark. A devoted animal lover, young Crickie could often be found at the barn riding horses or in the back yard playing with her beloved dog, Gretchen. Her fondness for animals grew stronger throughout her life. She caught the travel bug from her parents, as the trio traveled extensively throughout Mexico during her childhood.
Chris graduated from Quincy High School in 1961, and then attended Colorado Women's College. She moved to Houston with her husband Arthur in 1973 to raise her family. An energetic and supportive mother, Chris was actively involved in her children's activities including volunteering at schools, coaching athletic teams, leading troops of Girl Scouts, organizing events for the neighborhood club, and attending band concerts.
Chris was exceptionally creative and had a vivid imagination. She engaged in many forms of arts and crafts throughout her life including drawing, painting, sculpting, and creating dollhouses and miniatures. Her passion for miniatures was shared with others over the last 40 years through her Houston hobby shop which, inspired by her childhood nickname, she named "Crickets and Caterpillars." In addition to operating her shop, she also managed the retail building known as "The Marketplace."
Her grandchildren were a source of great pride and joy in Crickie's life. She delighted in assisting in the care of her twin granddaughters from birth through their adolescence, and enjoyed many special times with her grandsons. The legacy of Crickie's zest for life will live on through them.
The Higgins family will be present to receive friends on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 1:30 PM with a memorial service beginning at 2:00 PM at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Dr., Houston, Tex. 77079.
