Elberta L. Kunz, 96, of the Good Samaritan Home in Quincy, formerly of Sutter and Mendon, Illinois, passed away at 3:33 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at the home. She was born September 29, 1924, in Sutter, a daughter of Albert and Anna (Montag) Wilson. Elberta married Harold Peter Kunz on March 24, 1946, in West Point, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 16, 2004.
Surviving are two children, Merlin Kunz and his wife Lucinda of Huett, Texas and Joanne Dedert and her husband Gary of Fowler, Illinois; three grandchildren, Kimberly Caster and husband Gunnar, Matthew Kunz and wife Wendy and Lana Dedert Ohnemus; four great grandchildren, Wesley Kunz, Derek Kunz, Mackenize Ohnemus and Jacob Ohnemus; a sister-in-law, Helen Houghland of Champaign, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, granddaughter LeaAnn Dedert, sister, Oneta (Robert) Harrison; brother-in-law, Harold "Hap" Houghland; sisters-in-law, Bertie Mae (Paul) Crouch and Dorothy (Charles) Rosenboom.
Elberta graduated from Warsaw High School. She went on to work for Osgood and Sons dress company in Warsaw, Schrader Grocery Store in Sutter, and as cook for Kenny's Cafe in Warsaw. Later, she worked at the former North Adams Home in Mendon.
She was a member of the Bethany United Church of Christ, the Women's Guild and the Bear Creek Auxiliary Post# 823. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking as well as reading a good book. She also enjoyed embroidering.
The family wants to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Blessing Hospice for the exceptional care that they gave Elberta, particularly Sarah Thornton and Maggie Altheide.
Private Family Graveside services will be held at the Bethany Cemetery in Tiago, with Pastor Steve Disseler officiating. Interment will follow. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Sunday, January 24, 2021, at the Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon. Memorials contributions may be made to the Bethany United Church of Christ, 848 East County Road 70, Mendon, Illinois 62351 or Blessing Foundation for Hospice. im so sorry to hear this i got to know her when i worked at gsh and some of her family i enjoyed talking with her and being a friend with her she was one of my favorites she always had a place in my heart love u elberta
