Greggory Golemo Obituary

HAMILTON, Ill. -- Gregg Golemo, 65, of Hamilton, passed away just after 4 a.m. Monday (April 14, 2014) in St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1949, in Chicago, a son of Edward and Mildred Mordell Golemo. He married Camilla Veith on Aug. 10, 1974, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hamilton. She survives in Hamilton.

Gregg lived a life dedicated to the service of others. He worked as a social worker for 35 years, he was a prolific supporter of both Boy and Girl Scouts, and he was actively involved in emergency services in Hancock County. He was a deacon with the Catholic church, serving the Peoria and Davenport dioceses as well as acting as a chaplain with the Boy Scout National Jamboree. He was currently teaching religion at Holy Trinity High School, Fort Madison, Iowa.

Gregg was a caring, giving man, always looking for new ways to help others, and was always ready with a witty reply to any situation (appropriate or not). Those who knew him also knew him as an avid reader, and unapologetic sci-fi nerd and movie buff. He was always a font of knowledge and truly a joy to talk to. To his family, he was known as the greatest father and husband ever. To everyone who met him, his warmth and sense of humor was readily apparent. He will be greatly missed, not only by his family and loved ones, but by everyone whom he served.

According to his family, the best way to honor Gregg is to tell a (bad) joke, watch a war movie and share your popcorn, or to think of him in your prayers, especially Mass intentions.

In addition to his wife, Camilla, he is survived by his four children, Kathleen, Neil (Monica), Benjamin (Diana) and Elizabeth; two grandchildren, Genevieve and Hattie; and his brother, Philip (Irma).

SERVICES: A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hamilton. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.

VISITATION: 3-7:30 p.m. Sunday, with family present 4:30-7:30 p.m., in the church. A rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. in the church.

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family has set up memorials for Camp Eastman and St. Mary's Church in Hamilton.

ARRANGEMENTS: Lamporte-St. Clair Funeral Home.

Greg helped me through college with laughter and sympathy. He was the dearest of friends. Going to see him at his home in Chicago and meeting his family was an experience I´ll never forget-so far away from my Southern rural upbringing, full of good food and great humor. His memory will always be a point of light for me. My condolences to all his family.

I knew Greg to be a great guy. I enjoyed serving with him on the Girl Scout Council Board of Directors and visiting with him at Boy Scout activities. He was a true Scouter and a friend to all. We shall miss him but remember him always.
