James Harry Moore

James (Jim) Harry Moore, 93, of Golden Good Shepherd Home, formerly of Camp Point died on July 8, 2023. He was born October 16, 1929, in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Harry Ogle and Esther Humke Moore. His family lived west of Kellerville until 1933, when they moved to the residence on the east edge of Camp Point, also known in earlier years as the Allen Nevins childhood home.

Growing up, Jim attended Washington School, a one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Camp Point High School in 1947. Jim excelled in academics and track and field while in high school and qualified for the state meet in the long jump and 100- and 220-yard sprints. Jim attended Western Illinois University for one semester, but as a freshman he was tutoring senior level students in math and concluded he did not need a college education. On June 17, 1948, he met the love of his life, Rosemary Roy, and on May 21, 1950, they were united in marriage at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clayton, Illinois.

He began his farming career working for his father in 1948. In 1953, his brother Ronald joined the farming operation and together, with their father, started Moore Seed Company, being in partnership until 1985. He then farmed with his oldest son Steve, retiring in 1998. After retirement, he continued to be part of the farming scene. His greatest enjoyment was operating the John Deere combine during fall harvest, which was quite an advancement from the pull-type corn picker of yesteryear that he first operated. Jim's farming career spanned from helping his father plant check-row corn and husking corn by hand to using satellite global positioning auto guidance on the tractors.

Jim was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he held various church offices, was a member of the Lutheran Layman's League and taught Sunday School for many years. He was a trustee for Camp Point Township and volunteer ambulance driver for 3 Adam 19. In earlier years he was in the bowling league at Camp Point and helped coach 4-H softball.

Through the years, he enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's 4-H and school activities from sports to class plays. He and Rosemary loved to take off and go to "who-knew-where" on a drive, usually stopping at an antique shop for Rosemary before returning home.

During his retirement years, Jim spent many mornings at Jim Bastert Farm Equipment catching up on the latest local news while enjoying his morning coffee. Then it was off to the seed house at Dean Moore's to check the markets and read the latest ag news reports on DTN.

Jim is survived by his wife Rosemary and his children, Steve (Sherry) Moore, Camp Point; Melissa (Dick) Bowers, Springfield; Susan (Bill) Gilman, Springfield; Kathy (John) Bear, Orange Park, Florida; Beth (David) Stephens, Bowen; Joe (Joy) Moore, Camp Point; Jeff (Jill) Moore, Brimfield, Illinois and Denise (Paul) Stephens, Urbandale, Iowa.

He is survived by 35 grandchildren: Conrad (Brooke) Moore, Leanne Moore (Jeff Weese), Jonathan Moore, Sarah (Josh) Beck, Katelyn (Brandon) Ihrig, Kristen (Kasey) Dierking, Andy Bowers, Ryan (Andrea) Bowers, Carrie (Andy) Coon, Michelle (Ryan) Cox, Kim (Mark) Bugger, Katie (Dru) McCulley, Joshua (Brittni) Gilman, Jenny (Danny) Jackson, Devin (Hannah) Gilman, Melissa (Doug) Wilson, Allison Bear, Natalie (Tyler) Bear-Ceremello, Hannah (Taylor) Rebele, John Bear, Jr., Jeremy (Christine) Stephens, Aaron (Lindsey) Stephens, Johanna (Ross) Voss, Amy (George) Deaton, Anna (T.C.) Calvert, Josiah (Kirsten) Moore, Hayley (John) Davis, Heath (Jamie) Moore, Holly Moore, Jared Moore, Madelyn Stephens, Molly (Nate) Ferris, Linnea (Josh) DeWaard, Lydia (Jake) Larson, Isaac Stephens and 58 great grandchildren, with two on the way, sister-in-law Marilyn Moore and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ronald, sister Marjorie Bastert, her husband John and great granddaughter Zoe Gilman.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clayton by Rev. Kirk Cunningham. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Camp Point. A luncheon will be held following the burial at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 11, 2023, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clayton.

Memorials are suggested to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Golden Good Shepherd Home or Pleasant View Cemetery Association.
