Jayne Mathis

1925 - 2016

QUINCY - Marilyn Jayne Cason Mathis, 90, of Chapel Hill, N.C., formerly of Quincy, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Family and friends will remember her fondly as someone who always had a smile for others and who loved her family, fashionable clothes, the beach, chocolate, maps, sewing and handmade crafts, music, dancing, sports and her daily breakfast of two extra-large fried eggs.
Born Dec. 31, 1925, in Quincy, Jayne was the second of five children of the late James "Perry" Cason and Fern Parker Cason. She spent her formative years in Quincy and graduated from Quincy High School in 1942.
She attended Culver-Stockton College, worked in St. Louis, Mo., then moved to Washington, D.C.. in 1945 to work as a cartographer with the U.S. Geological Survey. Jayne married William Lowrey Mathis in 1949, and together they raised their five children in northern Virginia. After the passing of her husband of 53 years, Jayne moved to her current home in the Cedars of Chapel Hill, N.C., in 2004.
Left to cherish Jayne's memory are her children, Amanda Mathis Miller (David) of Durham, N.C., Amy Mathis Webb (David) of Lake Forest, Peter Mathis (Nina Swusdipanee) of Sonoma, Calif., Perry Mathis (Elisabeth) of Phoenix, and Anne Mathis Mandigo (Glen) of Bethesda, Md.; nine loving grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister, Karen Cason Murphy (Richard) of Lakeland, Fla.; her brother, Robert Cason (Margaret) of Mobile, Ala.; her sister-in-law, Marcella Cason (James Cason) of Mechanicsville, Va.; and nine nieces and nephews.
Her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Cason Anderson and John Anderson, and her brother, James Cason, preceded Jayne in death.
