Paul Heath Obituary

Dr. Paul Richard Heath, 78, of Cedarville, Ohio, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday (Dec. 27, 2012) at Legacy Assisted Living Center, Xenia, Ohio.

He was born Sept. 1, 1934, in Sparta, Mich., the son of Lowell and Minnie Larsen Heath.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the medical corps at the Naval Air Base in Jacksonville, Fla.

A star athlete at Sparta High School, Heath went on to play collegiate football and baseball. He completed his graduate and undergraduate work at Central Michigan University. Paul was a teacher and coach in Howell, Mich., and New Smyrna, Fla., for many years. His educational administration career began in Battle Creek, Mich., at Kellogg Community College. Heath worked in several capacities from 1964 to 1973, ultimately becoming the vice president of instruction. Heath completed his doctoral degree (Ed.D) in educational leadership at Western Michigan University while he was at KCC. During this time, he interned in the Michigan legislature. In 1973, he moved his family to Parkersburg, W.Va., where he served as academic dean at Parkersburg Community College.

In 1974, Dr. Heath was named the founding president of John Wood Community College in Quincy, and served in this position until 1987. While at John Wood, Heath was contributing author to "Cutting Edge Technologies in Community Colleges," published by the AACJC. He was elected chair of the Council of Presidents for the Illinois Community College Association 1985 and 1986.

In 1987, Heath became the fifth president of Elgin (Ill.) Community College where he continued to develop innovative education programs for the next seven years.

Dr. Heath was honored at the White House for his work at ECC. He retired in 1994.

In 1994, Heath received the Centennial Award from Central Michigan University. This prestigious award is presented to alumni that have distinguished themselves in their profession.

In 2000, he was honored as a Transformational Leader by the League for Innovation in the Community College and Community College programs, sponsored by the University of Texas, Austin, College of Education.

In 2006, his dedication to the growth and success of John Wood Community College as well as his passion to serve the people of the communities JWCC served was honored when the college chose to name the $8.8 million community and adult education building in his honor. The Paul Heath Community Education and Fine Arts Center houses JWCC community and adult education programs as well as the fine arts center and auditorium.

He will be missed most by his family for his patient guidance, his loving notes, his engaging laughter and his love of athletics. He was so very proud of his children and grandchildren's competitive athleticism and musical prowess. His pride in his family was unconditional. He shared in each accomplishment and reveled in their unlimited potential. Paul loved to read, listen to gospel music and golf. To the end he remained an avid Michigan Wolverines fan.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 56 years, Mary Jean Kearce Heath. Paul and Mary were married Sept. 21, 1956. Paul leaves behind a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Renee (Bruce) Bunyer of Shannon, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Kevin (Karen) Heath of Cedarville; five grandchildren, Alexandra Smith, Ariana Smith, Peter Heath, Mary Heath and Benjamin Heath; two grandchildren by marriage, Chelsey Bunyer and Megan Bunyer; a great-granddaughter, Autumn Ilseman; two sisters, Sandra Russ of Harrison Township, Mich., and Evelyn Crown of Des Moines, Iowa; a brother and sister-in-law, Lowell (Gail) Heath of Sparta, Mich.; several nieces and nephews; and by many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gordon Heath; and by three sisters, Virginia, Doris and Mary Lou.

Dr. Paul Heath was an outstanding leader in the higher education community. More importantly, he reflected the values of honesty, innovation, Christianity, friendship, and family. He loved Mary and his family. I had the pleasure of knowing them in Elgin and Bloomington, Illinois. He hired me as legal counsel and promoted me as the first female of color VP. He inspired and helped me to become a college president.

Each Christmas when I hear the Carol "I hear the bells on Christmas Day" I think of Dr. Heath, my former boss at Kellogg Community College. One Christmas he asked me to type out that hymn for his Christmas letter. Looking forward to a Heavenly reunion!

Paul is not an unfamiliar name to me, but I never got to know him personally. His family is another story and my heart goes out to their feeling of lose. To have lived such an exemplary life is an honor indeed, but it seems to make the lost all the more difficult. My you all feel God's comfort.

They called one another "Sugar". Theirs was a 56 year love story. Before he was Dr. Paul R. Heath, he was our Uncle Pete married to our beautiful Aunt Mary. He inspired our family long before he inspired the academic community. He taught me the saying "Red sky at night, sailors delight"....and that I could hear the ocean in a sea shell. He loved our family and Sparta, the little town where he was raised and played as a boy. He taught us to play hard and study harder. He also showed us, with his life, his love for the Lord. He adored my Aunt and Kathi and Bruce and Kevin and Karen and the grandchildren they gave him. He will be missed by our family and all of the communities he influenced with his gentle spirit. Until we meet again, Uncle Pete, we'll cherish our memories.
Love, Jayne.

Aunt Mary, Kathie and Kevin and family. Are thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. Uncle Paul was a great man. I always enjoyed talking with him. His advice was always very thoughtful. He loved to laugh. I still remember when we recorded the adults talking in my moms living room. Then the laughter they got hearing their conversation played back. As a kid the trip to Detroit with Paul my Dad and kevin to see the Tigers and White soxs play.. then slept all the way back to Battle Creek. God Bless

I was saddened to learn of Dr. Heath's passing. He encouraged me to take the position as Director of Financial Aid at JWCC when I was uncertain of my own ability. Turned out to be the best job I ever had. Paul was a great leader, just the right man to get JWCC off and running. My heartfelt symphathies to his family.

In 1970 Paul Heath called me in Chicago after my graduation and invited me to work for him. This tenure changed my life forever. Paul was truly a pro, a gentle-man and a wonderful Christian. May the God of all comfort give you peace, Mary, Kathy, and Kevin!

What a tremendous leader and friend Paul Heath was to those who worked for him! Dr. Victor Hopper was hired as Dean of Academic Affairs and I as Dean of Student Services before Dr. Heath was hired. Even though we were sure the Board made the best choice from the candidates for President we wondered how it would be to work for Paul. Well, it was terrific! He was a very caring guy with great instincts for working with a variety of administrators, faculty, and staff. Transformational leader describes him quite well, and he influenced my years as president of a community college, one of at least five presidents who worked for Paul. Thanks Mary, Kathy, and Kevin for sharing him with us!

Paul Heath was a fine gentleman...and a visionary. He helped my brother and I start our business, Quincy Metal Fabricators. I am not sure we would be here today without his help and guidance...now 30 years ago December 23 rd. Thank you again Paul! R.I.P.

What a tremendous loss. And what a great guy! Paul was a natural, charismatic leader. Everybody seemed to love and respect Paul Heath and as a result everybody wanted to help Paul move his colleges forward. I think that was the key to his many successes. Countless students and communities are in his debt. He was always willing to go the extra mile for the good of the cause. (I remember him travelling to the University of Michigan to straighten out an articulation problem for one of his John Wood students in Quincy, Illinois. Not many would have done that.) For all these reasons, Paul will continue to be a role model for many. My sympathy to Mary and all his family at what must be a difficult time. You are in our prayers.
