Wayne Shepard

1932 - 2016

MOUNT STERLING, Ill. -- Wayne Lyle Shepard, 83, of Mount Sterling, passed away at 5:13 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.

He was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Brown County, the son of Frederick William and Stella Taylor Shepard. He married Carol Logsdon Clark on Feb. 24, 1989, in Las Vegas. She survives.

Wayne owned and operated the Pub Café in Mount Sterling for more than five years and also had owned and operated Shep's Variety Store in Mount Sterling. He had worked for Brown County Motors in Mount Sterling and Alters in Beardstown for several years. Earlier in life, he worked for Quincy Trading Post.

Wayne attended Brown County schools and graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1951.

Mr. Shepard was a veteran of the Korean War, having served his country in the United States Army.

Wayne was a member and post commander of Mount Sterling American Legion Post No. 374. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and was a Little League coach for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Shepard of Mount Sterling; four children, Jackie Drebes (Wayne) of Fowler, Lori Tucker of Mount Sterling, John Shepard of Mendon and Tracey Reel (Rick) of Pittsfield; two stepchildren, Sherry Vermillion (Daryl) of Beardstown and Von Clark (Beth) of Timewell; a sister, Barbara Joan Hall (Melvin) of Tuscombia, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and several great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Fred Shepard; two brothers, Don and Ivan Shepard; and four sisters, Marie Sprinkle, Nellie Pate, Dorothy Smith and Jane Langan.

SERVICES: Per Wayne's request, cremation will be accorded and a graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Mount Sterling City Cemetery.

VISITATION: A memorial visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Hendricker Funeral Home in Mount Sterling.

MEMORIALS: Mount Sterling American Legion Post No. 374 and may be left at Hendricker Funeral Home in Mount Sterling.
