Frederick Binder Obituary
BINDER-Dr. Frederick M. Binder, 83, of Hummelstown, PA, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2004 in M.S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey PA. He was born November 18, 1920 in Atlantic City, NJ., a son of the late Paul R. and Kathryn (Moore) Binder. He was a retired educator and administrator, a graduate of Pleasantville (NJ) High School and Ursinus College and received his Masters & Doctorate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr Binder also held honorary degrees from the following institutions: Hartwick College, Susquehanna University, Wagner College, Rider College, Ursinus College, Washington & Jefferson College, & the University of Humberside in England. He retired as president of Juniata College after more than a decade of service & was a former professor of American History at Leeds University in England; a professor & administrator at Temple & thiel Universities; a professor and president of Hartwick College (NY), Whittier College (CA) as well as Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA. He also served as Associate Commisioner of Higher Education of the state of New York and was the first American historian to have been awarded a Fulbright Grant to the former Yougoslavia. Dr. Binder had numerous educational articles published as well as three books, two of which were award winners. He was a WWII Navy Lieutenant Commander of a PT boat in the South Pacific Theater; Episcopalian by faith, a member of the Cosmos Club in W ashington, DC; the Hummelstown VFW; a life long member & office holder of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity; and a former member of numerous community service clubs and professional organizations. Surviving are his wife, Grace (Brandt) Binder; two daughters Janet (Binder) Houts, Esq. and her husband John W. of San Diego, CA., and Roberta (Binder) Heath, Esq. and her husband Richard I. of Huntingdon, PA; three grandchildren; Frederick W. Houts, Kathryn G. Houlihan, & Connor J.R. Heath; and two step-grandchildren; Andrew P. and Derek R. Heath. Memorial services will be held Friday, February 6, 2004, at 11:00 A.M. in the St. Andrews in the Valley Episcopal Church, 4620 Linglestown Rd. (route #39), Harrisburg, PA. There will be no viewing. Inturment with military honors will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick M.
