Malcolm F. Wetherbee

1929 - 2017

It is with great sadness that the family of Malcolm F. Wetherbee of Peabody (Brooksby Village), formerly of Bedford, announce his passing peacefully on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at the age of 88 with his family by his side. Malcolm "Mac" was born in Peterborough, NH on February 18, 1929 to the late Kenneth and Sabra Wetherbee. At the age of 20, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving his country in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and going on to serve as a Security Police Officer before retiring after 20 years as a Technical Sergeant. He went on to work for Lincoln Laboratories/ MIT at Hanscom Air Force Base for another 22 years. Mr. Wetherbee was a family man, devoted to his beloved wife Dorothy and providing for their four children. He experienced deep joy from his travels to her home, St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, spending time with family there over the 55-year span of their marriage. He was a proud military man, believing in service to country, volunteering often to help other veterans. In his spare time, he enjoyed puttering around a car engine, taking continuing education courses at Middlesex Community College where he earned his Associates Degree, and making unique creations such as stained class windows, planters and bird houses. During his seven years living at Brooksby Village, Mr. Wetherbee made the best of each and every day. He was often found scootering around everywhere on campus. He had a deep appreciation for music, which he quenched by serving as a DJ, spinning classics for the residents every week. His quirky sense of humor, creative flare, and charisma were hallmarks of his personality. Even during the final stages of his illness, he made sure to get out and about almost every day, soaking in the sunshine or visiting his numerous friends on campus, both residents and staff. The turtles at the Brooksby Pond were also a highlight of his day. The husband of the late Dorothy Wetherbee of Bedford, he is survived by two sons, Michael Wetherbee and his wife Angela of Marblehead; and Patrick Wetherbee and his wife Debbie of Clinton; and two daughters, Marie Mills of Dayton, OH; and Pamela Wetherbee-Metcalf and her husband Rob of Bedford; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara McNutt of Jaffrey, NH. Also survived by numerous, cherished family members in St. Johns, Newfoundland, other mainland parts of Canada, New Hampshire, and Ohio. Visiting hours were held in Shawsheen Funeral Home in Bedford on October 10, 2017. A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 2pm in Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford.
