I worked with Steve in 1993 at Casa Metropolitan. He was the only one who could calm me down. He was brilliant and had a wicked sense of humor. I left Casa in 1995 to work for Licensing and Certification. His last goodbye words to me were, "Be Nice." I left Fresno in 2005 and came back in 2014. Tonight, 5/3/15, I had dinner with our then boss, Leila Knox-Malicoat. The first person I asked her about was Steve Gurry. Leila told me Steve passed on. I am deeply saddened. I googled him and found his brother's wonderful gift of remembrance: Steve, I know you are seeing this up there, save me a spot, will ya? I have been nice like you told me to be. I have missed you my brother, my friend, and my bear. And to his family, Steve is watching over you with his super-sized halo and angel wings! Thank you for keeping this site open.

Steve was a kind trusted gentleman who also was very tough when he needed to be. I miss him a lot. His sense of humor was more than anyone I know.

Every time I'd catch another trophy sized Steelhead, King, sockeye, Coho Salmon, Giant Halibut, my brother Steve was always there in my thoughts. One day we shall fish again, with the greatest fisherman of all.
Your little bro,
Richard

I didnt get to spend my life with my dad like I longed for. But ever since I was a little girl I wondered about my dad. I finally found him with much thanks to my Aunt June. Since then I loved my dad with great little girl love. My dad was handsome, funny, caring and a great and wise man. My dad can never be replaced and I will never forget him. I was so looking forward to our next visit together. I love you daddy. Your oldest daughter...

Steven was such a good looking boy in grade school that the girls would chase him during recess on the playground so they could kiss him. He would run up to me and ask if I would protect him from the group of girls.
When he was in the first grade in Tupelo Mississippi, Elvis's hometown, he was already an accomplished fisherman. He scouted out the nearest pond and came home with a slew of bluegill and crappie. June decided she wanted to fish too so the both of them walked to the fishing hole and when Steven launched his line he hooked Junes finger and she was rushed to the doctor who had to cut the hook in 2 after they gave her a shot to numb it.
I also recall the time he found Moms cash (for the bills) and he went to the movies for 10 cents in New Foundland. He bought himself a cowboy hat and an ice-cream and told the concessionaire "ice-cream for everybody", and that was before he was in the 1st grade.
One more memory; Old Mr. Jenkins Store in Tupelo was the typical neighborhood small family store. Steven found an opening under the crawlspace of the store and came upon a cashbox filled with money. He ran home to get me and the two of us bought loads of candy, gum and cherry bombs. The next time we returned the crawlspace opening was nailed securely

I remember my brother mostly for the soft side of his personality. Steven had a kind and giving heart and I will miss him dearly. You are gone, but not forgotten, my brother.

Steven A Gurry is survived by his Mother Barbara Gurry and sister Sharyne Walker of Fresno, CA. Also sister Kathleen Gurry of Suisun, CA, sister June Thomas of Shingletown, CA, brother Bill Gurry of Sonoma, CA and brother Richard Gurry of Alaska. Steven was an interesting individual to know. He had a wonderful way of reciting his memoirs with excitement and humor; a real people person. He would attract fellow musicians when he would whip out his harmonica in a park and soon an impromptu concert entertained the park visitors with joy.
He was a talented caring nurse and his patients were touched by his loving care.
