Robert Love Obituary

Robert Richard "Bob" Love passed away Tuesday morning of April 27, 2021 in Naples, Florida, surrounded by his loving family and the warm sunrise on the horizon. After a courageous 18 year battle with Parkinsons disease, the former all-star pitcher was finally relieved at the mound, and is resting in the dugout after a life well lived. Bob was born in Braintree, Massachusetts to George and Esther Love. He spent his younger years enjoying summers on Marshfield Beach with his three siblings Paul, Cornelia and Kathy and many beloved cousins. Bob was a three sport captain at Braintree High School, starting as quarterback for the football team, point guard for the basketball team and pitcher for the baseball team. Bob played in the Boston Garden over a dozen times, winning multiple state championships. After high school Bob continued his athletic prowess competing in football and baseball at the University of Connecticut and pitched at Fenway Park as a collegiate all-star. He was inducted into the Braintree Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995. Bob was an avid traveler, spending many summers after college motorcycling across Europe with old friends and new, negotiating his way across borders and running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. This passion never ceased in him, often taking his children on adventures and encouraging them to explore the world whenever the opportunity allowed. Bob temporarily hung up his cleats and put on his tie, becoming an English teacher at Central Middle School in Braintree, and later Vice Principal at East Middle School. During this time, the curly-haired, mustached administrator coached his three passioned sports for the local students. Bob married the love of his life, Carol, in 1976 and spent the next 45 years working as a team during the summers on Cape Cod, first founding A Little Bit of Love gift shop, and later as Managing Partner of Pirates Cove Adventure Golf. In his time in South Yarmouth, "Pirate Bob" mentored many young members of the community, both as employees and student athletes, and was also an active member of many Cape Cod organizations. Bob and Carol raised their three children, Courtney, Allison and Brian in Duxbury, but continued to leave footprints on both sides of the Sagamore Bridge with summers down the Cape. As the children grew, Bob was actively involved in coaching his kids in their various sports, both as a coach and as a spectator, never once missing game in any of their high school or collegiate sporting careers. Some of his happiest days were cheering along on the sidelines and taking pictures for everyone to enjoy. In his twilight, the avid carrot cake enthusiast enjoyed spending his time fishing on Bass River and in Naples, Florida, taking sunset tours on the Love Boat, catching Y-D baseball games, photography, and losing sleep over Boston sports. Bob is survived by his wife Carol of Bass River and Naples, FL, Courtney (Eric) Deshaies of Medfield, Allison (Joe) Hamza of Holliston and Brian of Chicago, Illinois. He was the ultimate "Papa" to five adoring granddaughters, Ellery, Harper, Scarlett, Sophia and Payton. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the American Parkinsons Association, or Avow Frances Georgeson Hospice House at 1095b Whippoorwill Ln, Naples, FL 34105. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming. While there is no true relief pitcher for the man that Bob was, he is now resting with a smile on his face, knowing he pitched a perfect game.

Mr. Love was my English teacher at South Junior High in Braintree. He inspired me to love to read and to become a teacher. He could fascinate the students by sharing his take on Edgar Allen Poe and his trips to Pamplona Spain and the running of the bulls. Spain is on my Bucket List and I will raise a glass to Mr. Love when I go.

Bob was my 1st quarterback in high school, and I remember how tough it was learning to catch that hard tight spiral with a lefty spin on it. He was also a talented kicker known for booming punts.
From freshman year on, he read from the Catholic bible every other morning at homeroom. My sister Carol read from the King James version the other days. Realizing from YMCA church league basketball that many students were Jewish, I helped organize a protest walkout every morning. It became quite awkward in the locker room and at home after that, especially since my grandfather Jim Jordan had been principal of BHS for almost 40 years. As it grew larger, Bobby and I had a long talk over this boycott, and he became one of the few who understood why it was wrong to force non christians to recite the Lord's Prayer before school every day.

I did not know this man but I must comment on what a wonderful write up he has here at this time of his passing. What a terrific guy and mentor to his family and friends. He is truly a hero in my mind as I got chills when I was reading about his amazing life. You must all be very proud. I wish I could have met him but at least I got the opportunity to read about this great guy. May he RIP.

Bob was a great guy! He taught across the hall from me at Central my first year teaching and always has the most entertaining stories. I’m glad the obituary mentioned the running of the bulls! Carol, I’m so sorry for your loss.

Robby will be missed. I can remember seeing him play basèball for UConn in DC. This was in 1966 on the Ellipse right below the White House near where the National XMAS tree is set up. He was a great son to. his mom Esther. I believe he would refer to her as Esther P. I remember a great time at Pirate Cove during Sullivan family reunions on the Cape. All the best to Carol and the 3 children.

Mr. Love was one of my favorite teachers at Central Jr High (74-75) & admired by all. I remember all the curriculum including Evangeline, Edgar Allan Poe, memorizing prepositions and his Poe inspired adjectives for each of us (Sagacious!) He had quite an impact on all his students. RIP Mr. Love and Godspeed. Suzanne (Hagerty) OBrien

I remember Mr. Love fondly as my English teacher at Central Jr. High. It was with him and a few members of my class that I made my first and only appearance on t.v. for the For Kids Only Program. He was truly one of the best teachers Braintree ever had! My condolences to his entire family❤

I taught at East for 36 years and Bobby was my Asst. Principal for part of the time. Always friendly, personable, and supportive. In fact he informed me of an opening early which I took advantage of. Very grateful for that!
My thoughts go out to his family, especially Carol, whom I taught with early in my career at East.
