Arthur Stringer Obituary

Arthur (Art) Campbell Stringer Jr., 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Brewster, Mass. on September 29, 2013. He was born August 17, 1928 in Chicago Illinois to Arthur Campbell Stringer, an executive in the radio broadcast industry, and Frances Sugg Stringer.
He was raised in Evanston, Illinois and Chevy Chase, Maryland where he graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High school in 1946. When he was 16 he got his pilot license and for many years he had the nickname ""Ace"".
Art went to Cornell College but transferred to Syracuse University when he found his interests moving to the broadcast industry. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1951 where he met his wife of 62 years, Sylvia Doble Stringer.
Art was an executive for 25 years in Chicago and New York for the John Blair Company, a radio and television representative company. He left Blair to become the CEO of Seltel, a Canadian television representative company.
Art enjoyed sailing and owned his own boat. He participated in the Chicago to Mackinaw Island race for many years. In 1981 he captained a friend's boat for the Ocean Yacht Race from Marion to Bermuda. He and his crew delighted in the fact that they placed third in their class beating Walter Cronkite.
In 1983, Art retired to Cape Cod to a family home where they had spent many happy summers. He loved playing golf at the Captains Course, bridge with friends and he and Sylvia traveled frequently. He served on the Brewster Finance Committee and was on the board of the Brewster Historical Society.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Doble Stringer, two daughters, Suellen Stringer-Hye of Nashville, Tennessee, Elizabeth Stringer of New York City, and two sons, Arthur Campbell Stringer of Missoula, Montana and Lewis Tipton Stringer of San Francisco CA. , sons in law: Rick and Don and daughters-in-law: Linda and Elana and seven grandchildren: Samuel, Allison Peter, Carl , Aaron, Dahlia and Josie. Art's children and grandchildren were a great delight to him.
Services for family and friends will take place on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 12:30 pm. at First Parish Brewster, 1969 Main Street, Brewster, MA.
The family greatly appreciates the care of both Hope Hospice and Visiting Angels.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hope Hospice, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.
