Glenn Shields Obituary

Glenn Shields, 67, died on December 15, 2015 after a long illness. He was born and raised in West Springfield, Massachusetts and attended the schools there. After graduation he enrolled at the University of Denver. He was drafted in to the US Army in 1968 and served in the combat engineers, including a tour in Vietnam. He attended the University of Massachusetts after recieving his honorable discharge from the service. Glenn moved to Wellfleet in 1977, working as a carpenter and fisherman. At that time he applied for the lease of a shellfish grant from the town, which he held and worked for thirty years. Glenn married Meg Gormley in 1981. He worked at the town marina for fifteen years, twelve as Harbormaster. Under his leadership Wellfleet Harbor was designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern by the State of Massachusetts. He also oversaw the computerization of marina administration, and introduced the use of a pump out boat to the mooring basin. An avid hockey player, Glenn participated in the senior men's league for many years. In addition to his wife, Glenn leaves his mother June of York, Maine, two sisters; Jill Bauman of York, Maine and Kathleen Whitchurch of Pleasanton, California, and two brothers; Kevin of Arvada, Colorado and Brent of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. His father, Robert Shields, predeceased him.
