Norma Simon

1927 - 2018

Norma Simon passed away early on November 2, 2018 comforted by her family. Norma was born in 1927 in Brooklyn, NY, the child of immigrant parents. She was a graduate of Brooklyn College and Bank Street School of Education, which greatly shaped her approach to early childhood education. She was a prolific childrens book author, pioneering the introduction of books which helped children give voice to their feelings, experiences and to celebrate the things that made them and their families different. Norma lived very happily in Wellfleet for 50 years and loved and was loved by so many good friends and neighbors over those years. She worked in the Wellfleet Elementary school for many years, helping children write the stories they wanted to share. Over the years she got great pleasure in talking to her former students when she would see them in town. She was very devoted to making and keeping Wellfleet a wonderful place. She loved nature, fishing and gathering food from the woods and shore and cooking it all for friends and family. She was an exceptionally loving grandmother, mother and wife and leaves her granddaughter Jessica, son Jonathan, and his wife Deborah, and joins her husband Edward, and daughters Wendy and Stephanie. She will be missed by all. A memorial gathering is being planned for the spring (details will be announced) Donations may be made to the Wellfleet Conservation Trust or Audubons Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
