Janet Hodgson-White Obituary

Janet Hodgson-White, 71, died peacefully at her home in Waban on December 5, 2011, after a long illness. Janet was born in Boston on September 9, 1941. The only daughter of Robert and Katherine (Sprague) Hodgson, she was raised in Hingham, MA. A graduate of Hingham High School and Vassar College, she was a dedicated teacher in the Brookline Public School system for many years. At that time she was known as Janet Berman. In later years she and her husband, renowned child psychologist Burton L. White, founded and ran a program for parents called New Parents as Teachers. Janet was the beloved wife of Burton White for over 25 years and the devoted mother of the late Mark Berman. Her brother William Sprague Hodgson died in 2010. Janet will forever be remembered by her loving stepchildren, Laura and her husband Mark, Dan and his wife Sheryl, Emily and her husband Eric, and David, along with her seven grandchildren, Sam, Jenny, Anjolie, Melissa, Rachel, Matty and Rebecca, her niece Haidan Hodgson, and the many other friends and relatives who were blessed to know her. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, December 17, at 2PM at the Newton Cemetery Chapel (791 Walnut Street, Newton Center) and a gathering afterwards at the Newton Marriott Hotel (2345 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton) from 3:30 to 6PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janets name to the Seasons Hospice Foundation (6400 Shafer Court, Suite 700, Rosemont, IL 60018) or the Mark H. Berman Endowed Scholarship Fund at Carleton College (One North College Street, Northfield, MN 55057).

Burt, I'm so sorry to have been so taken up with the passage of my own husband that I've neglected to call, although your faces came up often. You've been in my thoughts for quite a while now...

You must've known that Jani's parents were best friends with mine, and moved both to Rockwood Rd. in Hingham, and later to a small town in CT to be nearby. Katy and my Mom pushed Jani and me together in our baby carriages, we go back that far! Jani and I were inseparable during junior high, walking home from school together with that schoolgirl posture from carrying our folders and books across our fronts, laughing our heads off over who knows what foolishness and crossing our legs to keep from peeing in our pants...

She was a child of ethereal beauty. We used to tease that her hair was dishwater blonde, but it was actually flecked with gold. And her eyes were mossy green. with more golden flecks-- but you know all that. I remember when our French class went to see Marcel Marceau in Boston, and got to meet him backstage-- he could not take his eyes off her!! She mimed a song of Eartha Kitt's in the high school talent show, wearing a seductive red strapless gown... an old lady in the audience remarked to her friend "My, but she has a mature voice!"

So I've moved the 2 of you from my thoughts to my heart. Blessings to you and Fare Well to my old friend, may she rest peacefully in clouds of flowers as lovely as she~~

My sincere sympathy to Janet's family. I knew her well, as we were in the same class at HHS and shared many of the same classes. She was always sweet and sincere and was a good friend. Martha Wentworth Straub
