George Glover Phillips

George Glover Phillips passed away peacefully on December 2, 2009. Born in Ashland, Oregon on April 29, 1921, he grew up in Tacoma, Wash.
His National Guard unit was called to active duty during his senior year at Tacoma's Lincoln High School. Immediately following graduation from Officer Candidate School, he married his sweetheart, Ruth Lofquist in January, 1943. He served as a Communications Officer during WWII in Europe, and received the Bronze Star Medal for his brave actions to protect the allies. He retired from the Washington National Guard in 1967, as a Lieutenant Colonel.
George had a long and distinguished career with the City of Olympia, retiring in 1978 as the Director of Inspection & Maintenance. He was extremely handy with tools and always willing to lend a hand to those in need of his knowledge and skills. He had many hobbies and outdoor activities, including photography, fly-tying, ham radio (W7EFF), hunting, camping, fishing, golf, and many vacations with Ruth and their two children. Later in life, George and Ruth spent leisure time and travel with their two grandchildren.
His wife, Ruth, passed away after their 38 years of marriage. Following her death, he married Alice DeSorti, who also preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Glenn Phillips; daughter, Kathy Whisler; grandson, Casey Kanzler; granddaughter, Kristin (Phillips) Grewell; and great-grandchildren, Keeley, Kiana, Tanner, Katjana, and Otto; and 2 nieces and 3 nephews.
