Andrew Baumgartner Obituary

Andrew Baumgartner of Topsfield, a non- profit director, fierce advocate for those with disabilities, loyal family member and friend, teller of bad jokes, photographer, sports lover, and all-around mischief maker, passed away on Tues. November 21, 2017 at Sea View Retreat in Rowley, Mass. Andrew leaves his wife, Sally Ann MacDonald, and the light of his life his daughter, Erin Baumgartner. After 40 years as Executive Director of the former United Cerebral Palsy of the North Shore, (now Aspire Developmental Services), Andrew stepped down in 2017 due to his illness. He also stepped down from his part time sports photography assignments at the Lawrence Eagle Tribune. However, he never stepped down from being an amazing husband, father, and friend. Being an incredible people person, Andy loved meeting people whether it was during fund raising events or on vacation on the streets of Paris. By the end of a game at Fenway, Andy knew the names of everyone sitting nearby as well as their occupations, where they went to school, their childrens names etc. Andy, the son of Mary and Andrew Baumgartner, grew up in Carteret, New Jersey, graduating from St. Josephs High School in Metuchen and Seton Hall University. He received a Masters Degree from NYU. Being an excellent miler on his high school and college Track Team, Andy set a NJ record of a 4:18 mile. He passed down his love of running to Erin and attended all her track and other athletic events. Never needing a megaphone, Andy cheered her on unabashedly from the side lines. In addition to his wife and daughter Andrew is also survived by his son-in-law Tim Fu of Somerville, his sister Nancy Hill and her husband Edward of Virginia, his brothers Roy Baumgartner and his wife Barbara and Mark Baumgartner all of Carteret, N.J., many wonderful nieces and nephews, and many cousins including Gerry Puoplo and his wife Lucy of Middleton. He also leaves behind an amazing cadre of loving, supportive friends who made him laugh until the end. His funeral Mass will be held in St. Rose of Lima Church, Park St., Topsfield, Tuesday, Nov. 28th at 10:30 A.M. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Topsfield. Visiting hours in the Peterson-ODonnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (rte 62) Danvers, Monday, Nov. 27th from 4 to 7 P.M. Being part of Drew's extended family has been a great gift for which I am very grateful for having. Like days long ago, our extended family is still praising the accomplishments of Cousin Drew for living a life well lived and well enjoyed. Like his parents, Drew had a strong and driven personality. Luckily for him, Sally and Erin balanced it out by adding Yin to the Yang. I suspect Aunt Mary was determined to make sure Drew would one day be recognized as a saint and Uncle Andy was determined to make sure Drew would one day to be heir to Uncle Andy's evolving legacy as a surviving WWII POW, a devoted family man and well respected member of his community. Both parents would be proud; Drew lived up to their expectations.
