David Grayzel Obituary

David Marlowe Grayzel died unexpectedly in Concord, MA on Monday, October 9, 2017, at the age of 18. He was the cherished son of Julia Gallagher and Jon Grayzel and the beloved twin brother of Connor John Grayzel of Concord. He also leaves behind his adored dog Hudson. Dave was born in Worcester, MA on September 15, 1999, and attended the Touchstone Community School in Grafton, MA from kindergarten through eighth grade, actively participating in arts projects, writing, and theater productions. Prior to high school, Dave practiced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for nine years, becoming an accomplished wrestler. An avid and tenacious soccer player, Dave was a four-year varsity player at Concord Academy, where he was a senior. He also played at his schools late night Soccer Club and for FC Stars in soccers New England Premiership and National Premier League. A voracious reader of novels, non-fiction, The New York Times, and The New Yorker, Dave took a serious interest in current events, the environment, injustice, and individual responsibility. He was a regular contributor as both a writer and an artist to Touchstone and Concord Academy publications (the Chameleon and Centipede). Daves other interests included drawing and music. His bedroom wall was covered with clever cartoons and fantastical images he had created. Dave studied piano in his youth and enjoyed a wide range of musical genres, including hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and musical theater. Although Dave took life seriously, his ironic world-view fueled an active sense of humor. He was a great story-teller and punster. In addition to his parents and brother, Dave will be greatly missed by his grandfather, Arthur Grayzel and his wife Claire Lieberwitz; and his aunts and uncles, David Grayzel and Courtney Dickinson and Joe Ward and Sue Grayzel, as well as his cousins Benjamin and Annabelle Grayzel and Sarah, Miranda, and Rebecca Grayzel-Ward. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, John and Kathleen Gallagher of Barrington, RI, and his paternal grandmother, Estherann Grayzel of New York. Relatives and friends are invited to join the Gallagher-Grayzel family at a service celebrating Daves memory at 10 AM on Saturday, October 21st in the First Parish Unitarian Church, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center. A reception will follow the service. Dave was appalled that in the richest country on earth so many children regularly go hungry. To honor Daves concern, the Gallagher-Grayzel family would appreciate that in lieu of flowers donations in Daves memory be made to the Greater Boston Food Bank (www.gbfb.org) or to OpenTable (www.opentable. org). Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord. To share a remembrance or to send a condolence in his online guestbook, please visit www.DeeFuneralHome. com.

Hello, my name is Sheila Zelaya, first cousin of Arthur Grayzel. I am in the midst of planning a family reunion and came across this obituary. I am so very sorry to learn of this tragedy. Dave, I'm sure was named after his great-grandfather David. He was an astonishingly, gifted, talented and special young man.. It would have been an honor to have met him. Please, if you have the time, send me Arthur's e-mail. I want to reconnect with my family. I remember when Jonathan was born. All my love. Sheila Zelaya [email protected]

David and I have crossed paths during my 8th grade year at touchstone community school. It's funny how knowing someone for one year can have such an impact on your life. Not a single day goes by where I'm not reminded of Dave. We used to hang out drawing together and I always loved listening to his perspective on life and his outrageous sence of humor. The work that he created was incredible and I always loved being able to catch up and see what he was up to.
I've always admired Dave because when I met him he was a lot of the things I strived to be as a person. Thoughtful, creative, incredibly smart, and had an immense amount of self awareness. I remember him comming into a room yelling have no fear Barbarous Strican is here.

Back in 2016 I had the chance to see Dave once again when he went to Brown's summer program for, (I believe), creative writing. It's funny to say I was so exited to see him that I cried. But that's just the kind of man Dave is. He is someone who can brighten up a room with his witty commentaries and actions.

I unfortunately heard about Dave's passing right after his funeral while I was in Boston attending college. I decided to set out into Boston and go to this beautiful church near my school called Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Over there I lit a candle for Dave. I find what's beautiful is that in the distance, every six o' clock in the afternoon a church in the distance will play let there be peace on earth.

It might seem rather odd that I'm sending this so late in the year, however, I caught myself thinking about him today. Because if this I thought it was appropriate to share my condolences once again to the Grayzel family. Dave will forever live in our hearts and will never fail to serve as an inspiration for all of the incredible things he has done.

I first met Dave at a summer camp when we were really young. Years later, our paths crossed again through soccer. I remember playing a lot with Dave and Connor before they moved. My thoughts and prayers are with the Grayzel Family.

I am heartbroken to hear this news. There are tears in my eyes as I am writing this, though I only played soccer Conner and Dave for a few years, they taught me so much. No amount of words will express how much they have touched my life. Rest in peace to a man gone way too soon.

I remember Mary picking you boys up at Touchstone in the afternoons. She was so proud of you both, and was so happy to follow your progress. She continues to see the two of you as very special individuals.

I am so saddened by the lost of your beloved David. When I saw he was a twin my heart broke even more for you and his brother Connor. Please watch over Connor even more. The bond between twins is usually pretty strong. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time. You don't know me. I just saw David's beautiful face and had to read his orbit.

Dave - I remembering unloading your work from the kiln when you were in ceramics at CA and marveling at the beauty of your creations. I am grateful for the kindness and compassion you brought to CA, from the studio to the field to the classroom. You will be greatly missed.

David I can't believe you are gone. We met at EXPLO and although I never got the chance to connect with you outside of EXPLO you were a big influence on my life and I didn't even realize it until now. No one had to tell you to do the right thing, you did it. You taught me how to play wall ball and you welcomed me into your group of friends without any hesitation. It may have seemed insignificant to you but that small act made my entire summer. Those moments are by far my favorite things I have ever got the chance to experience. Thank you for showing me what it means to be a good person. Rest in peace.

I went to a summer camp with Dave and his brother. The two of them were amazing people to me and to the rest of the kids at explo. They were well liked, funny, popular and I will never forget them. Sometimes in school I would sit and wonder what they were doing, and I give my heart out to Davids best friend and brother Connor. I will never forget either of you and both of you changed my life for the better. Thank you so much for all the memories and for everything you did for me.
