David Margolius Obituary

David Alan Margolius, age 64, died peacefully on July 20, 2014. With a unique sense of humor, and always eager to hear or tell a good story, David could bring about a smile in the least expected ways. David was born to Garry and Mary (McEachern) Margolius, on October 4th 1949, in Pullman, Washington. He was the oldest of four children who all grew up in Lexington, MA. Although a very strong student he was also a gifted athlete and was drafted out of high school to play baseball for the Kansas City Athletics. He juggled his baseball career with service in the United States Air Force Reserves and undergraduate studies at Boston University. He earned his medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College in 1977. As the Chief Surgical Resident, he was awarded the I.A. Bigger Surgical Medal in recognition of integrity and leadership. David performed his fellowship in Columbus, Ohio and went on to practice General and Peripheral Vascular Surgery. He served Emerson Hospital for 25 years, during which he served two terms as Chief of Surgery and was President of the Medical Staff. David was known for developing deep relationships with his patients that extended well beyond a typical doctor-patient relationship. He carried on his passion for athletics watching his four children play sports. After the end of his medical career he followed his new passion of soccer and began refereeing. His other hobbies included gardening, reading, music, and film. David is predeceased by his parents, Garry, a professor at Boston University, and Mary, a music teacher and cellist. David is survived by his children: Garry, David, Amy, and Marie. He is also survived by his siblings, Ellen, Bob and Ann, many nieces and nephews, and close friend Vicki Andrews. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations made to the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center. A memorial celebration will be held Friday July 25th at 7:00 pm at First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road.

I am sad to hear of David's passing. We spent many hours in the operating room together assisting one another with complicated vascular surgery. He was a talented surgeon who managed to keep his cool at all times. His family needs to know that David was a special man with many talents. I miss him...

The Spuria family is sad to hear of the passing of our dear childhood friend. We grew up in the same neighborhood. Baseball, kickball or any other game we wanted we played on the diamond in their yard. David lived a full and active life. We have wonderful memories to cherish of great times and were blessed to have grown up during a time when neighbors were your family. David will be remembered for his warm smile and great love of life.
