Reed Cooper Obituary

Reed C. Cooper, 47, of Acton, MA, passed to a more peaceful place November 12, 2010. He was born in Indianapolis, IN. As a young person he loved the outdoors: the world of boating, fishing, camping, and he was a strong swimmer. Music moved him deeply. Reed loved animals: on an icy pond, he saved the life of his three-legged Boomba, when the dog fell into the water. Following a year at The Fenn School, he attended Lincoln Sudbury High School. Although he had became chronically ill, he finished his secondary education. He worked at Gerard Farms in Framingham for a few years. As the illness intensified, it prevented him from living an active life. Reed is survived by his parents, Jane & Crawley Cooper of Lincoln, MA, his sister, Kristin Knutrud of Westborough, MA, and brother, John (Deke) Cooper of Quincy, MA. Reeds nephews are Alexander C. & Nils D. Knutrud of Westborough and Michael D. & John P. Cooper of Quincy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eliot Clinic at Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA. A memorial service will be held at The First Parish in Lincoln on Bedford Road at 3 PM, Friday, December 17.

I first met Reed when we were in 2nd or 3rd grade on the playground. As was the convention among the boys, when you met someone new you wrestled to determine who would be higher in the pecking order. Reed won – he was very strong. It turned out he was pretty much the strongest among our peers. Having established our relative positions we became friends. We spend many years stomping around in the woods in Lincoln with his dogs Boomba and Thor, playing hockey on the pond near his house, and doing all the other things young kids do. As often happens, we lost touch over the years, yet those childhood memories are indelible parts of who I am. I’m very sad to hear of his passing.

Goodbye old friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with your friends and family.
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rain fall softly on your fields
And until we meet again, May God hold
you in the hollow of his hand.
