Wilson Flight Obituary

Wilson R. Flight, 65, of Concord, formerly of Pepperell, died Monday, September 30, 2013 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. He was the beloved husband for forty years of Lee (Roberts) Flight and loving father of Jennifer N. Flight of Anchorage, Alaska. Born in Everett on November 23, 1947, he was the son of the late Eli Wilson and Grace (George) Flight. He spent his formative years in Newfoundland, Canada before returning to Everett where he graduated from Everett High School. He graduated from Northeastern University with a BS in Geology, earned a Masters in Science in Geological Oceanography from the University of New Hampshire and an MBA at Rivier College in Nashua, New Hampshire. Mr. Flight retired in 2004 after 32 years of teaching in Concord. From 1973 until 1978 he taught Physical and General Science, Biology and Chemistry in the Concord Middle Schools. He spent the next 26 years teaching various science courses at Concord-Carlisle High School. During his tenure at CCHS, he taught Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics and most notably, Earth Science, a class he introduced during his first year at the high school. He believed the best way to learn Geology was to get on site and directly view and experience the subject matter being studied. He led students on field trips to the Canadian Rockies, the American Southwest, Iceland, Africa, and Japan. For twenty-five years, Mr. Flight led groups of students hiking, snowshoeing, backpacking, mountain biking, camping, sailing, kayaking, and rafting to every corner of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. From 1991 until 2000, Mr. Flight was an Adjunct Professor at Lesley College in Cambridge where he taught Earth Science, Oceanography, Astronomy and a course he introduced called New England Field Studies. Previously, during the 1970s, he was a Teaching Assistant in Geology at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, and worked as an Assistant Researcher on the Oyster River Tidal Project and Chief Researcher on the geology of Jeffreys Basin project. In 1992, he was a finalist for the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year Award, and was recognized by the Geological Society of America as one of the Outstanding Earth Science Educators in the United States. In 1993, he received the National Science Foundations Presidential Award in Teaching of Science. In 1995, he received Northeastern Universitys Distinguished Graduate Award for Excellence in Teaching, a Tandy Award for the Innovative use of Technology in the Classroom, and was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most creative minds in education in America. For many years, Mr. Flight was the co-owner and operator of the Down East Outdoor Education School, a non-profit venture based in Maine that provided educational trips during the summer months for high school students. In 1985 he and his wife, Lee purchased an old Sea Captains Home in Searsport, Maine which they converted into a Youth Hostel to provide students with a safe and convenient base from which to explore northern New England, especially Acadia National Park. A Concord resident since 1997, he served as Trustee of the Concord-Carlisle Scholarship Fund. Visiting hours were held at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center on Wednesday, October 9th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A celebration of his Life will be held on Thursday, October 10th at 3PM in the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 54 Walden Street, Concord Center. Officiating will be the Rev. Definetly one of the sharpest minds I have come across in any educational setting. That coupled with a keen sense of humor made his teaching experiences truly memorable. The news of his passing is just terrible to comprehend

Among all the wonderful teachers in the Concord-Carlisle system while I was there, Mr. Flight had an incredible impact that made learning about science a lot of fun. My condolences to his family members.

Mr. Flight will always stand out in my mind as one of my most extraordinary teachers. He inspired me and got me interested in science. He was respectful of us as students while pushing us to do and be our best. He was as very gifted and special teacher and I was very sad to hear of his passing last week. My deepest sympathy to his family. His influence on so many CCHS students will help him live on always.

Lee,

Lee,so sorry to hear about this. I got to know both of you when you would bring your computer into the shop for repair and always enjoyed talking to both of you. Take care

I remember Will dropping off and picking up his little girl, Jennifer, at our day care center at the Ripley Building many years ago. His eyes always would always light up the minute he saw Jenny. What a loving family! My deepest sympathies to you. With Affection, Chris (McVinney) Gerzon, former director of the Concord Children's Center.

Mr. Flight was a genuine person and a enthusiastic teacher. I was a student of his at CCHS. High school wasn't always easy for any of us as teen-agers. Mr. Flight made learning more fun, and made me feel welcome in the classroom. My condolences to his family.

I am deeply saddend by the passsing of a great man. One of the many reasons I am where I am and who I am is because of one conversation he had with me. It changed my perspective and outlook as well as my direction. Mr Flight reached out to me and we had the most amazing conversations. What suprised me is he told me I taught him something. Go figure. Anyway I will always cherish his love and enthusiasm for teaching...and not only in the classroom. Enjoy your new home with the Lord. We all will see you again one day!

What an amazing man, phenominal teacher, and true friend to myself his colleagues and all students blessed enough to be part of his life, he will be truly missed. So many memories of earth science class, he not only taught us typical text book science material, but he taught us a way of life a way to truly appreciate our surroundings by emmersing us in the beauty of the earth. From hiking trips to biking trips and white water rafting we were always on the go-and learning more each time with his enthusiasm and knowledge we were all enthralled students. I personally will carry so many life lessons with me taught by Mr flight, and will always share with him a true apprication for life, science and knowledge. And someday might find a precious alexanderite stone...if any of you were in his class you will know about the stone. May he rest in peace and always bring a smile and spark of enthusiasm to everyone in his remembrance.

So sad to hear of Mr. Flight's passing. He was my favorite teacher in high school. He was a dedicated teacher and really cared for his students. I will remember all of his stories he shared with us. I hope the family finds comfort in knowing how much he was loved by so many.

If there were more teachers like him in the world, there would be more scientists in the world. The way he ran his classroom should be model for how every teacher should. He taught the material in a way that truly made it come alive, but even that was not his greatest teaching accomplishment. They way he made his students feel empowered in their learning, they were not being taught at, but instead a part of the process, they had the ability to participate in the learning process, and that is what made him such a truly incredible teacher. He will be so very missed by so very many people.
