John Cafferty Obituary

John Patrick Cafferty died peacefully at The Harbor House in Hingham, on June 9, 2021, at the age of 82. John is survived by his siblings, Margaret "Peggy" Cafferty of Quincy, Bridget "Bea" (Cafferty) Dowd of Melrose, Eileen (Cafferty) Rocha of Hingham, James Cafferty of Curry Co. Sligo, Ireland, and Padraic Cafferty of Sutton Dublin, Ireland. He is also survived by his children, Mary Lou (Cafferty) Caperello of Kingston, Sean Cafferty of San Francisco, Calif., Albert Cafferty of Whitman, Susann (Cafferty) Seafuse of Kingston, and preceded in death by his daughter Christine of Hingham. He will be missed by his grandchildren, great-grandchild, many nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of family and friends both in Ireland and the United States. John was born on December 7, 1938, in Sargura Curry Co. Sligo, Ireland, to James and Mary Cafferty. After emigrating to the United States with his sister Bea, one of Johns first jobs was at the South Shore Country Club. He developed a keen interest in real estate and property development while working as a senior manager for the Flatley Company. John attained his Real Estate broker's license and was the owner/manager of the Cafferty Company. He successfully managed several South Shore Commercial Properties for decades. John was also a member of the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency and the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority. John was very active in the town of Hingham in various organizations including the Hingham Community Center, the Kiwanis Club, and the Rotary Club of Hingham. He was passionate about local government and held positions with the Planning Board and the Housing Authority for the town of Hingham. He also used his extensive political knowledge and contacts as campaign manager for the re-election of State Representative Mary Jeanette Murray. He was an active and dedicated member of the St. Paul's Parish in Hingham and served as an usher for many years. John was a proud veteran of the United States Army and enjoyed participating in local ceremonial events. He will be fondly remembered for his love of a good party, glass of Chardonnay and being first on the dance floor. A funeral is scheduled for Monday, June 14, at St. Pauls Church, North St., Hingham, at 10 am. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, June 13, from 3-6 pm at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond Street, Hingham. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Johns life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Edward Ball Cole Post 120, American Legion, P.O. Box 72, Hingham, MA 02043. John´s stories were the best. Over the years, many of them ended up in the Tinytown Gazette. One in particular involved a suspicious hole in one at the Hingham golf course.
Goodbye to a man with a heart of gold.

I met John three plus years ago when I needed to go to Harbor House for my care. I found out that he was a campaign manager/supporter of State Representative Mary Jeanette Murray of Cohasset, where I have lived all my life. I am a 3rd generation Cohasset native and a neighbor Mary Jeanette and her Husband Phil. So, we had a connection the
re. We went to lunch everyday in the downstairs lunch room and had lots of good talks and became friends.
He will be sadly missed by me and all that knew him.
Fondly,

john was a wondeful friend and "charmer" to so many.
Altho, Ireland was his birthright , so evidenced in that inimitable
Galic accent, his loyalty and patriotism to the US never wavered.
His joi de vie and that "laugh" so often overshadowed an intelligent,
sensitive gentleman. We will not forget him.
