Salvatore Amonte Obituary

Salvatore L. "Sam", a lifelong resident of Hingham, passed away April 10, 2011 at the age of 87. Beloved husband of the late Phyllis (Fanizzi) Amonte. Loving father of Diane St. Laurent and her husband Larry of Hingham, Annette Barrett and her husband Stephen of VT and Rose Yodzio and her husband Lance of Hingham. Devoted grandfather of Louis, Richard, Eric, Paul, Ben, and Samantha. Great-grandfather of Jake, Henry, Kaitlyn, Allison, Anna, and Stella. Brother of Louise Logsdon of IN, and the late Lena Kristnofe, Nellie Santavicca, Rocco Amonte, Joseph Amonte, Viola Achille, Frank Amonte, Pasquale Amonte, and Grace "Dolly" O'Donnell. Sam proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Princeton. The Princeton was bombed in 1944 killing 108 men on board. After eight hours in the water, Sam and many of his crew mates were rescued. After the war, Sam worked as a police officer for the town of Hingham. His friendly spirit and easy going demeanor were a perfect fit for the job. To this day, he is fondly remembered for his days in uniform serving in Hingham Square. After retirement, Sam began his second career for Pyne Keohane Funeral Home in Hingham. He comforted countless grieving families with his natural warmth and charm. A past president of the Hingham Sons of Italy, Sam enjoyed many social occasions with friends at the club. He was also a member of Hingham American Legion Post 120 and a member of the Hingham Police Association. His vegetable garden was legendary and his tomatoes were second to none. Most of all, Sam devoted his life to his family. He will be greatly missed by all those who were lucky to have known him. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday 4-8 p.m. in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), Hingham. A Celebration of Life service was held in the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday prior to the funeral Mass in St. Pauls Church, Hingham at 10 a.m. Burial in St. Paul's Cemetery, Hingham. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sam may be made to St. Pauls Church, 147 North St., Hingham, MA 02043 or to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018. I am certain I can speak for all of my siblings when I thank Sam for his kindness, especially to our mother. She could not manage to parallel park when shopping downtown. However, that was never a problem because she just kept driving around the square until she spotted Sam and he would park the car for her! Such a wonderful man and wonderful memories.

Sam was one of the best cops Hinghamever had. He would administer the law in such a way that no criminal, no matter who, would take offense. He served honerable for the town of Hingham and was a great example of how to be a police officer. Sam will be missed by all who knew him.

I remember Sammy giving my sisters and I a ride home from school in the cruiser and even turned the lights and siren on in the driveway. Scared our mom out of her wits! We all had a good laugh. Sammy made Hingham feel like "Mayberry."

All my life I've treasured memories of Sammy downtown. From working at the donut shop, to hanging out at the pizza joint after school, or anywhere in the area, Sammy had a smile and kind word for everyone. Even after not living in Hingham for over 20 years, when I returned to downtown, there was Sammy and he still knew me, and still knew my name and proceeded to tell my kids stories about me as a kid. Rest in peace Sammy and know you're much loved and will be sorely missed by so many people.

Dear Family of Sammy,
Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of your loving father. He was the kindest man. I was his neighbor at 98 Kilby Street for many years and he taught me everything about gardening. He was such a sincere happy man. I have nothing but fond memories of having him as a true friend and neighbor. I am enclosing an Irish poem that I sincerely hope will be of some consolation in this time of grief at the loss of such a wonderful gift to humanity.
Sincerely,
Jimmy Nally

Lessons of Experience

I learn as the years roll onward
And leave the past behind
That much I have counted sorrow
But proves our God is kind;

That many a flower I longed for
Had a hidden thorn of pain,
And many a rugged bypath
Led to fields of ripened grain.

The clouds but cover the sunshine,
They cannot banish the sun,
And the earth shines out brighter
When the weary rain is done.

We must stand in the deepest sorrow
To see the clearest light,
And often from wrongs own darkness
Comes the very strength of right.

So the heart from the hardest trial
Gains the purest joy of all,
And from the lips that have tasted sadness
The sweetest songs will fall.

For as peace comes after suffering,
And love is reward of pain,
So after earth comes heaven
And out of our loss the gain.
