William B. Austin Jr., 82, of Hingham, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2014, surrounded by his family at South Shore Hospital. He was the husband of Donna (Frederick) Austin. Born in Upper Darby, Pa., he was raised in Ridgewood, N.J. He was the son of the late William and Inez (Brock) Austin. Since both of his parents were born and raised in Honea Path, S.C., Mr. Austin had a strong connection with the town and his relatives there. He graduated from Princeton University in 1954 and served in the United States Army in Germany as a First Lieutenant. Mr. Austin was a vice president of Bankers Trust Company of N.Y., 1956-1974. He was vice president and then president of South Shore Bank in Quincy from 1975-1987. He was a managing agent at the Resolution Trust Corporation from 1989-1994. Mr. Austin served on many boards, including the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, Quincy Neighborhood Housing, Quincy Mutual Fire Insurance, Thayer Academy, and Habitat for Humanity. He was an active member of the Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist in Hingham and served on the vestry. Mr. Austin was also an amateur historian and genealogist, a lover of bad puns, an avid golfer, and orchestrator of family vacations. He recently took up boogie boarding at the ripe old age of 82 so he could play in the waves with his grandchildren. Besides his wife of 50 years, Mr. Austin is survived by his son, Bennett Austin of Fort Collins, Colo., and his three children, Hayden, John, and Camille; his daughter, Abby (Austin) Evankow, her husband David Evankow of Gorham, N.H., and Davids two children, Annie Evankow Dimantchev and Ethan Evankow; and his daughter, Amy Austin, her husband Ronald Albuquerque of Acton, and their two children, Jeremy and Miranda Albuquerque. Visiting hours will be held for Mr. Austin Friday, December 12, from 4-7 p.m. at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond Street, Hingham. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 13, at the Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main Street, Hingham.
