Matthew Brennan Obituary

Matthew J. Brennan, III, 70, of Marlborough, died Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Rose Monahan Hospice in Worcester. He was the son of the late Matthew Joe J. Brennan, Jr. and Helen (Donovan) Brennan. He was a devoted son to Helen and Joe and cared for them with love and compassion through the final years of their lives. Following his graduation from St Anselms College. He moved to Atlanta and worked as an Event Manager at the Omni Sports Center, home of the then Atlanta Flames. He returned home and worked for the Boston Red Sox ticket office and eventually joined the Boston Bruins as Director of Ticket Sales Matt was a kind and generous soul. There wasnt anything he didnt do, nor wouldnt do for his family and friends. Somewhat shy, and unassuming, his good nature was endearing to all that knew him, you just couldnt help but like Matt. Matt, in the Brennan tradition, was an avid sports enthusiast. He was a passionate and skilled football player and was proud to be a member of MHS Panthers Football Team. He was also a sprinter for the Track team and at one time held the school record for the 100 yd Dash. He took up golf later in life, and always enjoyed a round of golf with his uncles, cousins and his numerous lifelong friends. Several years back, Matt won the prestigious Cape Cod Classic golf tournament. Matt loved to travel, and combined with his love of sports, he attended major sporting events around the country. He made several trips to Europe with friends. He also loved being on Cape Cod. He had a home in Wellfleet that he generously shared with friends and family. You were always welcome in Matts home. Matt especially liked the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. It afforded him the opportunity to be with his family and friends and where he found his greatest joy in life. He is survived by his aunt, Aline Newton of Athol, MA and his uncle, Robert E. Brennan of Marlborough. He is also survived by numerous cousins from both sides of his family, too many to be mentioned individually. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2020 from 4:00PM-8:00PM at the Slattery Funeral Home, Inc., 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough, MA. Funeral Mass and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Compassionate Care ALS, 752 West Falmouth Highway, Falmouth, MA 02574 or the American Cancer Society at www.donate3.cancer.org.

I just found out about Matt's passing! We hadn't chatted since the pandemic began, back in March 2020. To say that Matt had a major impact on my life would be an understatement. Whether setting me up with tickets to the 1978 Red Sox 1 game playoff vs the Yankees, pulling strings to get me in to Super Bowl 20 after my tickets fell through, Matt did it joyfully, asking nothing in return other than talking sports with him whenever we saw each other. To this day, I still speak glowingly about Matt and all he did for me as well as my family and friends. Most notably, he got me a gig at the Garden running stats between periods of Bruins games and got me another as a vendor for Red Sox games, all because he knew how passionate a fan I was.

Matt was the most unselfish person I have ever known. Even as he was caring for his own Father or Mother when they were ill or getting on in years, he never failed to ask me how my own Mom was doing, right up until the day she passed. That was just the way Matt was!

I am so much better a person for having known Matt for so many years, dating back to the late 79's, but truth is, Matt was always a mentor to me as much as a friend, for his unselfishness, his passion for sports and for his love of his family and friends! RIP my friend, you are one of a kind!

I just found out about Matt's passing and am so heartbroken and empty! We hadn't chatted since the pandemic began, back in March 2020, which I regret. Matt will always be remembered by our family as a kind, loving and generous soul. I had known Matt and his parents all my life. We are all deeply saddened by his passing. The lives of all who knew him were blessed by his presence on earth. Peace be with you Matt. Love from the Nugent Family.

My fondest memories of Matty go back to the early 1980's when my brothers, Jim Brennan, Jack and Matty would rent a house in Wellfleet for a week.
My younger sister and I were always allowed to tag along and remember how welcomed Matty always made us feel. Matty had a great sense of humor, exceptionally kind and fun to be around. He often would be the one to coordinate dinner reservations for the gang and daily trips to White Crest beach. I remember one morning everyone left for breakfast leaving my sister and I behind. Matty was still there and offered to bring us to breakfast just the three of us. Always so kind and thinking of others.

If there was a guide book on being a human being of character, humor and goodwill, Matty's face could grace the cover. Bless you man, and enjoy the next stage of evolution in your spirit's journey. Hope we meet again on the other side.

I had the pleasure of having Matt in my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Marlboro, I don't think there was a week that went by that my father and I didn't visit him to hang out. And every time he'd see me, Matt would announce my name like he was announcing a boxer coming to the ring. He would make me feel like I was one of the guys talking with him when I was just a kid. To this day, he is the guy I always gloat about to my friends by telling them I know someone that worked for the Bruins. My most fond childhood sporting event memories I went to with my family was because of Matt's generosity and kindness. While attending college in Providence, he made sure my friends and I could head over to the arena on a Friday night for a hockey game with no problem whatsoever. That's who Matt was. He always thought about others before himself. How he interacted with me while growing up is how I try to interact with my friends' children. He was a true influence in my life and a wonderful person. May he rest in peace.

Matt and I met shortly after I moved in two years ago. We shared a hedge, a love of cats and an appreciation of Marlborough's history. From the start I knew how fortunate I was to have him as a neighbor and will truly miss him. My sincerest condolences to his family and everyone who loved him.

Matt will be so missed in Wellfleet, where he so enjoyed spending time at his lovely second home. Through my friend and his cousin, Tina, we became friends. Living in the neighborhood, in his absence, I became the guardian of his many potted plants which he adored. Consequently, I became part of the fold and was graciously included in many memorable gatherings in his home which he generously shared with many relatives and friends. He treated me like family and I was always happy to be in delightful presence. RIP my sweet friend.

Our condolences to the Brennan family. Matt was such a joyful presence! He was always patient when taking our many calls about putting tickets up at Will Call for family and friends during Brick's playing days. Never made you feel like a bother - To the contrary, he seemed genuinely delighted to hear from you each and every time! He extended that same warmth and outgoing interaction to all those folks we sent to his window. Matt, along with Jimmy Foley, were Boston Garden Box Office legends who will forever hold a warm place in our memories.

When we were vacationing at the Cape every year and got together with the Marlboro crowd, within minutes Matt would always come over and say hello to us and our kids. He always wanted to know how everyone was doing. He always made everyone feel welcome. We will miss him very much - his gentle nature, his kindness and especially his smile.
Rest in peace, Matt
