Richard Owen Obituary

Richard Newell Owen, 82, of Prudence Island, R.I., and Stoughton, formerly of Easton, died at home surrounded by family and friends on June 8, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Owen is survived by his loving wife, Pat (Regan) of 57 years; and his 2 children, Stacey Blount and her husband Kevin of Sandwich and Charlene LaFerriere and her husband Brian of Stoughton. He leaves behind his 4 grandchildren, Dan and Chris Blount, and Jill and Kelsie LaFerriere. He is also survived by his brother, Edward and his wife Elsie; his niece, Christine Bradley; and 2 nephews, Edward Mitch and Tim Owen. Born April 22, 1934, he was the son of the late Coburn and Evelyn (Mitchell) Owen. Mr. Owen or Dick as he was affectionately known, graduated from Stoughton High School and joined the apprenticeship program at Bethlehem Steel. He served in the Navy during the Korean conflict and after the war returned to work at the Quincy Shipyard. Dick continued on even after the shipyard closed, retiring as a supervisor in 1987. Dick was a lifelong summer resident of Prudence Island. After retirement, he and his wife Pat spent the majority of their time on the Island. He was a prominent long term member of the Prudence Island Volunteer Fire Department including a role as Asst. Chief, and was very involved in the Prudence community as a whole. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Dicks wish was that friends enjoy a cold beverage in his memory. Donations may be made in Dicks memory to the Fisher House, Boston or the PIVFD.

I will miss my "Gengler Lawn Cheerleader"!
I can honestly say I have never met a kinder, more gentle man. The world has lost "one of the good guys" and sadly there are so few left these days. My condolences to you Pat and your whole family.

Death is the heartache no one can heal,
Memories are keepsakes no one can steal.
Beautiful memories are all we have left,
Of the ones we loved and will never forget.
Softly the leaves of memory fall,
Gently we gather and cherish them all.
Planted deep in memory's garden
And watered daily with tears,
Memory has a magical way
Of keeping loved ones near.

My memories of Dick are far back in the 50's when I knew him as a teenager. Even then what he would become as an adult was clear.
He was every inch a gentleman. Whenever I think of Dick a smile comes to my face because he was such a lovely man, and when our paths would cross at Marcy's getting the morning newspaper he would call me "Prissy". I hope his family takes great comfort in the tender loving care with which they surrounded him on his beloved island.
