John J. Jim Hosking, age 67, loving husband for 21 years of Linda D. (Gamble) Hosking of Marblehead died early Friday morning Oct. 8, 2010, in the North Shore Medical Center, Salem following a lengthy battle with cancer. At one time he served as a Marblehead, PHRF Fleet Captain and was also a broker with Sail Boats NorthEast at Little Harbor in Marblehead. Jim enjoyed sports cars and driving his restored Austin Healey. Jim was happiest spending time with his family and friends. His gourmet meals were enjoyed with great conversation and a smile following a day of sailing, skiing or gardening. He loved his cats and his Airedale, Piper. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Kimberly Whitney and her husband, Michael of Newmarket, N.H., his Bonus Grandchildren Heather and Katie Whitney of Hopkinton, MA and a nephew Josh Butler of Manitou Springs, Colo. He was predeceased by his twin sister Christina Mary Hosking. His funeral will be held on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at 1 p.m., in St. Michaels Episcopal Church, 26 Pleasant St., Marblehead. Dear Linda,
I just happened to be looking for old friends on Facebook, and I came across this guest book. I'm a bit in shock right now, as I had no idea that Jim was sick or that he passed away almost a year ago. I didn't send any Christmas cards last year, and so was out of touch with you and Jim. I am so very sorry to learn of your loss. You and Jim were together for as long as I can remember. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I'll drop you a line, in case you don't see this post before it closes soon. ~ In love and friendship, and with great sympathy.

Linda, I am sorry to learn of Jim's death. What a great photo of Jim. It captures his vitality for life. I'll always remember seeing him on the CYC porch following a race. Regardless of how he finished or the weather, Jim always a big smile on his face. He lightened me up.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I worked with Jim in Yellow Pages & got to appreciate his sense of humor during the conversion to laptops for sales personnel. He helped others take it in stride & always had a funny comment that would have me laughing until tears came. I know that he is sailing in heaven as it was his second love after his family. It was a pleasure knowing such a wonderful person.

Dear Kim,
I was so saddened to hear of the loss of your dad. He & I worked together at Yellow Pages for many years. I remember when we first met you were just a child and he would always talk about about "my Kimmy". Jim was always a pleasure to be around ... always a smile and not a mean bone in his body. Although I have not seen him since he retired, he is one of the few people I will always remember as a great guy who always made me feel better after just a 'hello'. Find comfort in all the good memories and knowing he is at peace and happy on the ultimate sailing trip.

Linda,

We are so very sorry for your loss.

We will always remember Jim so fondly. He was a man of great character and fun, and was always there with his lighthearted wit. It was the two of you who had us looking at C & C’s and even came with us when we first looked at the boat we ended up buying and naming Nonpareil. Jim then helped to deliver her to Marblehead from Fairhaven, on a very cold Spring day.

We also remember that great trip to Napa with the two of you, sitting in the waiting room at Opus One, all four of us wearing our red sailing gear as we looked at the ‘nursery’. And we can’t forget the many dinners we’ve had at each others’ houses and how he tried again and again to get me to eat brussel sprouts.

He will be sorely missed by friends and by the sailing community. ‘Fair winds and following seas’ Jim.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Linda, Kimberly and family members. Jim was endeared by everyone who came in contact with him. He will be known as one of Marblehead’s great sailors and someone who was always willing to help or give advice unconditionally to fellow sailors in need.
Working with Jim was a pleasure and his knowledge of sailing will be dearly missed, along with his quick wit and contagious smile.
Until we cross-tacks in another life, we bid Jim fare well for now.
Happy Sailing Jim,
Your Crew at Sailboats Northeast

Dear Linda, Kim, Mike, Heather, Katie and Piper,
I am still seeing his smiling face and hearing all his great tales of the sailing experiences and will always remember many experiences with Jim on Ares. My sons always loved his stories and visits and that he wanted to teach Chrissy how to Jitter Bug was hilarious! My family has our hearts, prayers, and thoughts with you all. Jim has blessed our lives in SO many ways.

Dear Linda & Kimberly

Pat & I were so sorry to learn of Jim's passing. I first met Jim in 1970 when we both worked for the Yellow Pages. My kids (Peter & Lisa) often refered to him as "Uncle Jimmy"

We will always remember Jim as a caring, fun loving guy. Our ski trip to the Balsams in Dixville Notch comes to mind. Do you remember... "Walk this way?"

Even though we are down in Florida, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
