Michael Mahon Obituary

Michael Mahon was born in South Boston on July 22, 1950. He lived in Melrose his entire well lived life. He died after a brief illness on June 4, 2019, age 68. Michael was predeceased by his loving parents Edward M. & Alice F. (Daly) Mahon in 2008. He was raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School in 1969. He received the Robert Nordstrom Award at graduation for his outstanding achievement. Michael (also affectionately known as Mike or Mickey) was a remarkable person who overcame significant physical adversity with his indomitable spirit, strong will and clever mind. Although unable to physically accomplish such tasks, he could teach anyone how to unclog a drain, bend conduit, change a door frame or rebuild a carburetor. He roamed all over Melrose in his motorized chair, an inspirational sight. He had numerous places he liked to visit and was always welcomed; DPW, The Mayors Office, Ozzies garage, Turners for haddock and a double order of mashed potatoes. He did a phenomenal job at not letting his disability stop him from enjoying a wonderful life. He has a passion for drag racing, maintaining a beautiful home and being well traveled: Canada, Indianapolis for races and even an amazing trip to Ireland with brother Ed and his sidekick/Cousin Jimmy. He also loved to tell stories and entertain; many memorable dinner parties with relatives and friends. And we cant forget that he operated Mikes Bike Repair Shop from his home, starting at age 12 and continuing for a decade. There are not enough words to describe the impact that Michael had on so many people. He touched so many lives and everyone that had the privilege of knowing him realizes their good fortune. We are all better people for having Michael Mahon in our lives. Michael was the beloved son of the late Edward M. & Alice (Daly) Mahon. Loving brother of Edward M. Mahon Jr. & his wife Hilary of Michigan and Tricia Mahon & her fiance Perry Yeldham of Boston. Cherished uncle of Katie Wagner & Matt of Denver, CO, Kristine Lipson & Dustin of Salt Lake City, UT and Thomas Kleinmahon & Jake of New Orleans, LA. Also survived by many Cousins, grand nieces, grand nephews and friends. Visitation will be held at Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Friday June 7, 2019 from 4:00-8:00PM. Funeral procession from Gately Funeral Home on Saturday morning June 8th at 8:45AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Hearts Church, 315 Main St. Malden at 10:00AM. Interment at St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Melrose Wakefield Healthcare Nursing Department, 585 Lebanon St. Melrose, MA 02176. I'm sorry that most of my memories of Mickey have faded. I lived across the street and grew up with Mickey. At age 19 our lives went in different directions and I never had contact with him again.
But the memories of his family are just as strong today as they were in 1966 and they will forever remain etched in my mind. I remember how whenever another kid tried to hurt Mickey, his brother Ed and sister Tricia would quickly and appropriately intervene and set everyone straight. I clearly remember how Mr. and Mrs. Mahon (known to me) nurtured Mickey's mechanical curiosity and helped him operate a bike repair shop in the garage. I remember the green Grande Torino Mr. Mahon had fitted with hand controls and when Mickey could no longer drive his dad would carry him to the car and take him to the auto races he loved.
After I became an orthopedic surgeon, while at the Mayo Clinic, I sometimes had patients like Mickey and having the memory of the Mahon family etched in my mind helped to make me a better doctor.

Dear Patty 'Tricia',
I believe we were MHS 1970 Classmates. I mentioned to you that my bicycle was in need of repairs and a 'tune up; you told me 'My brother can fix it'. My trip to his 'shop' was one of several and I kept that bike running for years. I'm on a different bike now, but still hitting local rail trails regularly.
'Mike' was always so cheerful, upbeat and positive;he was so friendly and genuinely kind. I am thinking of you on the loss of your wonderful brother and extend my sincere sympathies to you at your time of loss. I hope the happy memories and support of the many whose lives he touched will help to comfort you. Warmly, Jane A. Desforges

May Mike spend time with God in Heaven. Mike was a definite example of a man who love everything and everyone around him. Having lived on East Foster Street a few doors down Mike would often stop by for a quick word or suggestion. May he now experience the freedom to move about and without limitations in Heaven.

Our sincere condolences to Ed and Patricia, their family and friends, and all who were ever fortunate to know Mickey. The children who grew up on Laurel Street, East Foster Street, and Gooch Street (dozens of them) were all Mickey's friends and we are poorer today for his loss. It is fondly wished that the happy memories we all hold of Mickey will ease the pain of his passing and give comfort to his family. With great love and affection on behalf of all the neighborhood families.

I was blessed to have known Michael for most of my life. Tears are leaking from my eyes now and parting from Michael is painful. A kind and gentle heart has stopped beating.
Michael may not have been able to do many of the things we all take for granted every day, but what he did do was with courage, a smile and a love of life and the love of Edward and Trisha and so many family members and friends. He saw past the difficulties and found the possibilities.
To all who knew him, he was an inspiration. Michael reminded us that most of our problems are not really problems and to be grateful each day.

from mike's student years at MHS he was remarkable! everyone knew this and respected and loved him! he possessed limitless energy and drive, a presence of decency and positve leadership...completely selfless, always.

michael was a founder of the MHS auto club. he loved hot-rodding, cars, car shows, the drags and followed it all over the east USA. he was a regular at epping...in the pits and start lines.

mike was known all over melrose, inspirational, always smiling and happy, with nice things to say...a testament to his ever-devoted parents.

you're missed already, mickie, and will be remembered.

Mike was the most amazing person I ever knew. One day when he was going by he asked me to adjust his hat. The hot sun was on his face. He was planning his 70th birthday party and I'm sure a trip some where. We will miss him and never forget the determined man he was. God Bless you, Mike
