Harold Scheibert

Harold Hal Scheibert of Bedford died peacefully on July 13, 2013 at Carleton-Willard Village, where he had been a resident since 2008. He was 83 years old. In 1956, Harold received a Masters of Sacred Theology degree from Concordia Seminary, St Louis, Missouri, thereafter working as homiletics teaching/research assistant with Dr. Richard R. Caemmerer. This was followed by service in the pastoral ministry of the Lutheran Church in parishes in Kirkwood, MO; Albany, NY; and Marblehead, MA. In 1973, Harold received a Masters of Education in School Administration degree from Salem State University and from 1969 until 1992 taught for the Newton Public Schools. He delighted in teaching younger children, with the majority of his career spent with fifth graders at Hyde Elementary and third graders at Bowen Elementary. During his teaching tenure, he worked with Brandeis University as a cooperating teacher, field supervisor, and children's literature seminar leader, overseeing the student teaching experiences of many future teachers and being fondly remembered by them. An avid outdoors man, Harold enjoyed hiking and bicycling. He was a member of the Audubon Society and Sierra Club, participating in many of their adventure trips. After retirement, his volunteerism included things as diverse as working as the patient advocate at a local hospital and maintaining hiking trails in nearby parks. His large extended family is grateful for the extensive research he did into the familys history, going back centuries and accumulating and logging a vast amount of information and photographs. This was shared at a large 1998 family reunion he hosted, when each participant received a CD with this treasured family data. Born in Detroit, MI on May 1, 1930, Harold was the third of seven children of Ernest and Alma Scheibert. Harold is survived his son David Scheibert of Las Cruces, NM; and his daughter Marie Scheibert of Sharon, MA, and his two dear granddaughters Lily Clare (10) and Leah Rose (6). He is also survived by four of his siblings: Ernest Scheibert of Toledo, OH; Faith Russert of Manteno, IL; Rhoda Knudson of Albert Lea, MN, and Irma Kelly of Washington Crossing, PA | as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on September 24 at 10:00 oclock at the Lutheran Church of the Newtons, 1310 Centre Street, Newton MA, where the family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time.
