John Brown

1924 - 2017

John "Bub" Brown, born June 5, 1924, to Wilson S. Brown and Marion E. Brown, lifelong resident of Scituate, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on August 16, 2017. He graduated Scituate High School 1942 and served in the Army Air Corps in November 1942 to November 1945, stationed at Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1956-1962. John married Ethel Hollis on September 2, 1945. They raised their three children, Ellen, John Jr. and Wilson in his grandparents farmhouse on Stockbridge Road in 195. Bub established Fitts Farm Construction. He specialized in foundation and road excavation. He coached Scituate little league baseball. He served on the Scituate Water Commission from 1953 to 1964 and as Scituate Highway Supervisor from 1970 to 1986. He was President of the Plymouth County Highway and Massachusetts Highway Associations. John and Ethel traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, England, Germany and France. He served as Master of the Satuit Lodge in 1969, 1993, 1994, 1997 and 2001. Bub was an enduring presence at the Beechwood Congregational Church. Bub and his Masonic Brothers created a scholarship fund by collecting bottles and cans at the Scituate Transfer Station. The Masons awarded over $48,000 in scholarships to Scituate High School graduates. Bub lived a life of service to the United States, to Massachusetts, to his hometown of Scituate, to his spiritual community, to his Masonic Brothers and to his family. John is survived by Ethel Brown, his wife of seventy-two years; his sons, John Brown Jr. and wife Jing and Wilson Brown and wife Marlene; his grandchildren, Katherine Curran and Alex Brown, John E. Brown, Samantha Griffin; his great-grandchildren Zoe, Logan, Autumn, Hope, Jack and Ava; his sister, Laura May Houghton. His daughter Ellen passed away in 2010. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bubs life on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. in the McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central St. (off rt. 123, near state police barracks), Norwell Center. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the First Trinitarian Congregational Church, 381 Country Way, Scituate. Interment Fairview Cemetery, Scituate.
