Dear John, Peter, and Tony,
Today I read in the Hellenic Voice about the death of your Mom,my mother's dearest friend and beloved to me for 70 years and my husband for almost 50 years.
She was cherished by the entire Sophios family. We last saw her at her 80th birthday party-a beautiful tribute to a beautiful lady. We wish we had lived closer so as to have seen her these past years, and are heartbroken that we didn't know of her passing so that we could have driven to Weston for her funeral.
You were all very fortunate to have had her as your Mom and grandmother. We know that your cherished memories of her will sustain you in your grief.

We never felt more welcomed than we did when Mrs. Decaneas met us at her door.

Dear John, Tony, Peter and all the Decaneas clan,
One day, when I was 4 years old, my Nouna invited me to her house for the weekend. I loved going to my Nouna's and hanging out in the kitchen (far more interesting than the discussions in the living room). But that weekend was one I never forgot because she took me to the shoe store. I didn't much like shoe stores, but I had always coveted a pair of shiny red shoes. No one every got me any red shoes. But you know what? My Nouna got me the shoes I always wanted. At the sight of those shoes, Dorothy would have surely abandoned every hope of ever getting back to Kansas with her ruby slippers, Cinderella's Prince would have discarded the glass shoes and forgotten about Cinderella, and their respective godmothers would have resigned in shame from fairyhood. MY shoes took me to far more interesting places than Kansas or the ball, and so did my godmother. She taught me a lot about a lot, just by being there. Who can forget the trips to Sagamore? And who can forget the big Greek celebrations in Weston at every holiday, when there were so many different dishes that they had to set up a table in the basement to hold them all? Peter taught us to get to the table early so that we could get our fair share of phyllo from each pita. I was fortunate to have the best Nouna - and Nouno - ever. They taught me about kindness.
I don't know where those shiny red shoes are, but they will always be as magical as the fairy godmother who gave them to me.
Love, Panetha
