Thomas Phillips Obituary

Thomas Leonard Phillips died at his home in Weston, Massachusetts on January 9, 2019 a few months shy of his 95th birthday. Tom is survived by his four children and their spouses | Patty and Bob Fraser of Concord, MA; Bobbie and Dan Suratt of Wellesley, MA; Debbie Phillips and Lee Robertson of Rye, NY; and Tom Phillips and Ellen Hopkins of New York, NY. He will be dearly missed by his eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 73 years, Gertrude Van Iderstine Phillips. Tom achieved the pinnacle of business success as Chairman and CEO of Raytheon Company, where he spent his entire professional career. But he is remembered most by the legions of people he touched and influenced for his values and generosity, which have left a lasting legacy for his family. His family was preeminent in his life, and he loved bringing everyone together, providing experiences that created a lifetime of memories. In his last thirty years, he looked forward to frequent visits and calls as the family grew up and spread around the world. Born in Istanbul to Greek parents, he emigrated with his sister and widowed mother to Canada in 1929 and then the U.S. in 1936. He was a poor kid from Mission Hill who excelled at the Boston Latin School, studied Electrical Engineering at Northeastern, and was called to serve in World War II, enrolling at Virginia Tech. He married Gert in 1944, had Patty while still in the Army, and Bobbie while still a graduate student. He distinguished himself in electrical engineering and was eventually recruited by Raytheon on a tip from his buddy John Goode. Tom spent his entire career at Raytheon, rising rapidly through the leadership ranks based on his intellect, discipline and integrity. He was always a modest man and liked to remind people that he got some breaks along the way, including the mentorship of T.C. Wisenbaker and Charles Francis Adams IV. He served as CEO from 1968 to his retirement in 1991, adding the Chairman title in 1973. Tom served on the boards of many corporations and foundations, including John Hancock, Digital Equipment Corp, Knight Ridder, Mass General and the Joslin Diabetes Center, as well as Gordon College, where he endowed the Phillips Music Center in 2000. Tom was a devout Christian, and he believed deeply in the importance of faith in everyday life. He also believed in the value of a liberal arts education, and with Raytheon he endowed the Phillips Scholarship Fund at the Boston Latin School in 1992. For over forty years, Tom hosted monthly First Tuesday breakfasts, assembling local businesspeople and friends to develop personal and professional leadership in his Christian community. A lifelong athlete, Tom grew up on the basketball court, was a formidable tennis player, a competitive squash player well into his sixties, and a devoted golfer in his later years. Through his nineties, he rode his stationary bike several times a day. His competitive drive in sports was undiminished to the end and played out in hourless games of Rummikub with children, caregivers, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be held at the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Wayland, MA, on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Toms honor may be sent to the Phillips Scholarship Fund at the Boston Latin School. The website address is www.blsa.org (go to Giving/Donate and please note the Phillips Scholarship Fund in the comments box) and the mailing address is Boston Latin School Association, 27 School Street, Suite 300, Boston, MA 02108. this is for Mr. Phillips daughter Debbie...
you probably don't remember me but no matter.
I'm Bruce Cornblatt and we knew each other a hundred years ago for a brief but wonderful period of time. One day after tennis together, i had dinner with you and your family.
Your Dad was great..asked a lot about me and what i wanted to do etc- all with good cheer...I could tell in a minute how close your bond was to your Dad.
It was with sorrow that I saw he had passed away...all these years later, I thought of you and wanted to send my condolences..
would love to know how you're doing..i'm at [email protected]...
hope you're coping as well as you can Debbie...

I met Tom Phillips in late 2008, at the Raytheon headquarters in Waltham. I went into the meeting not knowing who he was besides that he used to work at Raytheon. In the 45 minutes I spent with him, we talked nothing about work, but instead everything about a common connection we had....I taught his grandson, Henry, archery at Camp Brookwoods a few years prior. At the very end of the meeting, I handed him my resume and mentioned I would appreciate if he could do anything. He stated he didn't know anyone anymore but was having lunch with someone who may be able to help. Sure enough a week later I was called for an interview for a job I hadn't even applied for. I learned afterwards that he was having lunch with the President of HR for all of Raytheon. It was then that I realized I had met the founding father of Raytheon, who was President/ CEO for 23 years.

Over the years, I met him a handful of times since that day, and have always been amazed by his poise and humility. Oddly enough I ran into the friend (John Goode) at a wedding in 2010. I learned at that wedding that John was the one who introduced Tom to Raytheon back in 1948 and recommended he join the company. I'm privileged to have met Tom (who helped me, get my job) and his friend, John Goode (who helped Tom, get his job).

Tom led Raytheon as he lived his personal life, with trust and integrity. He was a man of strong faith and few words, but when he spoke everyone listened. When I walk the halls at Raytheon and see his picture, I am reminded of what he did. He started as an electrical engineer, became a lead engineer who ran the missile department, and eventually was the lead person who designed/ developed the HAWK Missile System. He was rightfully nicknamed "Mr. HAWK". I'm honored to have known such an inspirational and special man in the limited capacity that I have.

Mr. Phillip's generosity through the Phillips Scholarship Fund at Boston Latin School transformed my life and brought blessings beyond what I can express. I would not have been able to go to college without it. I am eternally grateful to Mr. Phillips and the entire family. My deepest condolences during this time of loss.

I worked at Raytheon from 1958 until 1993. I was always proud of the leadership of C F Adams and Tom Phillips. I encountered Tom at Sandy Island on Lake Wynnipesaukee where we were camping. Tom and family were old hands at Sandy Island. He was faith based and he kept principled official and personal standards front and center. I was always proud of being on his and Charles Francis' team.

My supervisor, George F Benoit, lived next door to Tom while I was there. A nice time of my life.

I wish all Tom's family the best and please know how important Tom's leadership was to me and others back when. Dick Brooks Farmington, Maine

He epitomized the very best in American business leadership. Honest, decisive with an unwavering moral compass, he was instrumental in building Raytheon into one of the country's strongest and best managed companies.

He will be missed by the many who were touched and guided by his generous nature and his intrinsic values.

My sincere condolences to his family.

As a Raytheon retiree from the Missile Systems Division, I am well acquainted with Mr. Phillips leadership and pro bono qualities. I have always felt very lucky that I was guided there and helped in the defense of our country, and that Tom Phillips was instrumental in making it work and providing a great structure to accomplish it.

I fondly remember those glory days of Raytheon when Mr. Phillips was our respected and ever-so-capable leader.

What a dignified and elegant man he was.

Sincerest condolences to the Phillips family.
