My heart goes out to you and all of Travis' family. We also recently lost a boy who shared Travis' curiosity and sense of belonging in the natural world , and under similarly tragic circumstances.

Travis was kind of heart and had a super brain. He was happiest running free; on surf, or slope or sand. He was dearly loved by his big family of aunts, uncles and cousins and most especially Mom and Dad. And now he's gone we love him more.

We were at Lake George for a family boat camping weekend. I made a historically bad call to convince the group to go for a sunset cruise just before a brutal storm blew in. As the sun set and we headed back, the big lake went from flat calm to white caps in an instant. We quickly found ourselves trapped on an increasingly angry lake in diminishing light. The boat was loaded with scared young kids hunkered in the cubby below. We also had on board two terrified mothers, two very concerned fathers, and Travis (age about 13). At the landing site, the short dock was precariously positioned next to large boulders on either side. Approaching the dock would be dangerous but as conditions worsened there was not much time or space to sort out how else to manage the situation. Travis moved immediately into action. He secured a bow line and readied himself to get ashore. Craig maneuvered the boat the best he could to get Travis to where he could try to get to the unstable dock. The boat bounced high and then very low in the waves as the dock wobbled and the rain blew sideways. In the first attempt, the boat smashed hard down onto the dock and then bounced sideways toward the rocks. Craig powered the boat backwards just before hitting them. It was clear that we would not have the luxury of too many failed attempts. Travis remained calm and readied himself for the next try. Craig approached again and on Craig's signal Travis leaped to the dock, bow line in hand. I quickly then tossed him the stern line. Travis quickly pulled the lines and the boat sideways into the dock bringing us all into safety. It was one of countless times, I saw Travis Tanny instinctively swing into action to deliver a much needed hand in the midst of a daunting situation. It was where he thrived. Here's to hoping that we can find something in his example that day to together help to get this boat to the dock.

Travis never failed to bring a smile to my face, even in the most difficult times. I remember when we were hiking at the Philmont Scout Ranch, Travis took pack weight from anyone who was hurting. At the end of the trip his pack weighed about 65 pounds. I will always remember how kind he was, and his great sense of humor.
