After reading Joanie's words about her dad, whom I never had the honor to meet, I understand how she came to be the amazing person I am pleased to call friend.

He was the one...who read bedtime stories every night. He was the one...who walked the dog every evening no matter the weather. He was the one...who held our hand and walked us into first grade for the very first time. He was the one...who got involved with the boy scouts. He was the one...who asked to be called, "Oh Great One" or "Dali LLama", your choice. He was the one...to remind us that "winners never quit". He was the one...who drove all the kids to school on rainy days on his way to work. He was the one...who worked extra shifts any time he was called during the night. He was the one...who got on his hands & knees with 2 kids on his back playing "horse" until he collapsed from laughing. He was the one...who cut off the airport bus so it wouldn't leave without me. He was the one...who dreamed of things he wanted to provide for us and made each one happen. He was the one...who learned to scuba dive in his retirement. He was the one...who learned sign language just because he "might need to communicate with someone who is hearing impaired" while volunteering on disaster relief with the Red Cross. He was the one...who was happy to get the call to serve. He was the one who wrote a letter every Sunday night after I moved out. He was the one who asked, "Is there anything I can do for you?" before ending a conversation. He was the one...whose opinion I really valued. He was the one who volunteered for the Civil Air Patrol. He was the one...who went bungy jumping, sky diving, hang gliding, and for a hot air balloon ride - all in his 70s! He was the one who would invite everyone out to dinner and cover the table; it was his pleasure. He was the one who appreciated anything anyone ever did for him. He was the one who bought a custom-made-frame for a crayon drawing made for him by the 5-year-old daughter of his then occupational therapist. He was the one...who provided toys for children whose families could not afford them. He was the one...who taught us to donate our toys & books to the hospital. He was the one...who was available to talk over a problem any time. He was the one who could fix anything. He was the one who taught us how to drive. He was the one who would pick up trash on the street on a regular basis. He was the one...who taught us how to ride a two-wheel bicycle. He was the one...who cleverly requested of us, "Pull my finger!" He was the one...who asked us to rub the top of our heads so he could find a parking space. He was the one...who would put the needs of anyone else before his own. He was the one...who lived his life courageously, in honor of his country. He was the one...who walked in faith, in service, and in gratitude.
If anyone is worthy of being remembered as the epitome of kindness, generosity, encouragement & love, HE is the One!
