David Axe Obituary

David Samuel Axe
November 30, 1941 – July 23, 2025
ALLEGAN, MI - David Samuel Axe, 83, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, at Ely Manor in Allegan.
Born in Grand Rapids, David was the son of John Jacob Axe and Elizabeth Katherine (Lynott) Axe. He grew up in Allegan and pursued his education at Culver Military Academy, the University of Michigan, Hope College, and Putney College (Vermont), eventually graduating from Grand Valley State University. He went on to teach elementary science in Grand Rapids, MI; Rochester, NY; and Douglas, MI.
David was known for his sharp wit, generous spirit, and deep intellectual curiosity. He possessed a vocabulary that would make a scholar jealous and relished a good debate. A self-taught musician and avid reader, he had a passion for philosophy, history, and the arts. He enjoyed collecting antiques, attempting to build guitars, and riding classic motorcycles-famously losing a toe in the process, a story he proudly shared. He was always quick to help others, especially those he believed needed something more than he did.
He is survived by his children, Penelope (Axe) Muenzer and her husband Douglas, and Samuel L. Axe and his wife Stephanie; grandchildren, Vance and Cole Muenzer, and Lia Axe; his brother, John R. Axe of Grosse Pointe Farms; and close friend, Sam Surprise of Portland, Maine. He was formerly married to Penelope A. Surprise, with whom he remained lifelong friends.
Per his wishes, no formal services will be held. He will be interred at Oakwood Cemetery in Allegan.
