Constance Brown Obituary

Constance Brown
Constance ("Connie") Carolyn Tucker Brown died peacefully on February 19th at the age of 85. She was born in Wichita, Kansas, to Edwin Sparr Tucker and Marguerite Elizabeth Tracy Tucker. Connie grew up and graduated from high school in Eureka, Kansas, where her family was involved in banking and cattle ranching. She completed her first year of college at Monticello Women's College in Alton, Illinois. She then transferred to the University of Kansas, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. Connie and her husband, Minter Brown, met and married while both were at the University of Kansas.
During the next 37 years of her life, Connie moved geographically twelve times when her husband went to graduate school and was transferred to different locations by his employers, McKinsey & Company and Exxon Corporation. This resulted in her setting up and operating new homes, and adapting to new surroundings in Houston; Boston; Santa Monica; Stamford, Connecticut; Sydney; London; Randolph, New Jersey; and finally Wilton, Connecticut, when Minter retired in 1996. In 1963 and 1966, she gave birth to two sons, Tucker and Marshall, and then was instrumental in raising them as they grew up with the family in several US and overseas locations.
During the period of Minter's employment, Connie was employed at different times as a business secretary and an elementary school teacher. In London and New Jersey, she operated her own antiques business, specializing in small English decorative items. However, her major activities outside the home involved charitable work, and over the years she spent a great deal of time doing hospital volunteer work, working in soup kitchens, assisting individuals afflicted with AIDS, working with sick people in prisons, and serving as a director of a homeless shelter.
After she and her husband retired in Connecticut, Connie became active in the local alumni organization of her college sorority, Pi Beta Phi, and served as president of that group for two years. This involved her in additional charitable work on behalf of her sorority. In Connecticut, Connie also became an enthusiastic and accomplished perennial flower gardener and was active in the Wilton Garden Club. She attended services at the Wilton Congregational Church.
Throughout her adult life, she was an avid reader of books and an enthusiastic international traveler, committed to learning and understanding as much as possible about the world in which she lived.
Connie was an intelligent, generous and gracious person who was sincerely interested in the situations and well-being of others. She was tolerant and non-judgmental, and this, along with her great personal warmth, endeared her to almost everyone with whom she came into contact. She was very loyal to her many friends.
Connie is survived by her husband of 64 years, Minter, of Wilton, Connecticut; her son, Tucker, of New York City; and Tucker's daughter, Chelsea, also of New York City.
