Douglas Schneider
2/15/24
Douglas Robert Schneider, born November 18, 1955 in Clinton, Iowa, passed away on January 26, 2024 in Rockland, Maine, at the age of 68. He grew up on the family farm, first in Illinois and later Wisconsin. After high school, Doug attended the University of Illinois Carbondale on a math scholarship, where he also discovered a love for the sport of rugby. He then briefly returned to farming before leaving to work as a carpenter in Colorado. After marrying in Colorado, Doug moved to Connecticut, where his three children were born. Doug was self-employed in his fine carpentry and specialty home remodeling business. In his later years, he divided his time between Baraboo, Wisconsin, Stamford, Connecticut, and Rockland, Maine.
Doug was a multi-talented man and devoted friend to many. He loved hunting, fishing, and cooking; in his later years, he especially enjoyed making his mother's recipes with his grandchildren. Doug delighted family and friends with his unending knowledge of music, frequently breaking into song in the middle of a conversation, stunning with his lyrical recall. Possessed of a sharp wit, he loved a good debate. And as a passionate student of history, he would not hesitate to employ that knowledge to win said debates. Doug had many friends from all quarters of his life, from his high school classmates to the customers that would more quickly consider him family. Generous nearly to a fault, he would give his last dime to anyone in need.
Doug was preceded in death by his beloved son, Kyle Reid Schneider; his parents, Donald Richard Schneider, Sr. and Wanda Lange Schneider; his sister, Carol Ruth Schneider; and his brother-in-law, Bryce Knuth. He is survived by his beloved son, Douglas Lyle Schneider (Gabrielle McMahan); his beloved daughter, Rachel Lange Schneider; and his adored grandchildren, Nettle Reid Schneider and Otto Robert Schneider; and his former wife, Mary Reid Buchanan Schneider. He is also survived by his brother, Donald R. Schneider, Jr. (Rita); his sisters, Wendy Schneider Allard (Richard) and Sally Schneider Knuth (Philip Budde, Jr.); and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, family and friends.
Memorial Services and Celebrations of Doug's life are being planned for the spring in Connecticut. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held on May 4th, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. at the Lyons Train Depot., located at 56 25th Avenue North, Clinton, Iowa.
