Crystal,

My father had often spoken of Al, describing him as a man of exceedingly high character, dignity, and humility. I finally got the honor of meeting him at the "drugstore", and from then on, I looked forward to visiting Statesville and gathering with Dad's friends at the drugstore. I always sought to sit at the table where Al was seated.

My Mother, Hilda (Al called her "Hildy"), and I, will miss Al, but we are better people having had him as a friend.

Dear Archibald Family,

Coach Archibald was an important person in my early life. He taught me History and was my coach on the Track Team. My nickname is Tony but he insisted on calling me Anthony although he knew that wasn't my given name, every now and then he added "adverse" for some point of emphasis. I left States ville wanting to be as good a man as Al Archibald-it was an honor to see him for just a few minutes at our last reunion. Seeing him just confirmed to me that I had the right role model.

Respectfully,

Coach Archibald sent film and made numerous contacts with many colleges because he thought I could play college ball. When he decided that he was going to take a principle's job and not coach what was my senior year , he called me to explain. I owe much of what I have accomplished be cause he cared for his players. we are all better for having know him.

My thoughts keep going back to U.S. History class at SHS, 10th grade I think.

My family and I had just relocated to Statesville from points North.

"Mr. Archibald" would let us work on homework for a bit at the end of his class. He would drift to the window right at my desk, front left corner and he and I would chat about "the North".

He was an expert at engaging in conversation, always interested in what you had to say. For a young girl who was feeling like a fish out of water, he was a life saver")

Through the years I had the privilege of calling him Al as our worlds meshed into home town living, families growing, time moving on.

If we are lucky we have people in our worlds that touch our minds, our hearts, our souls, sometimes all three.

Al Archibald was one of these people. He has gone to claim his crown with its many stars but it is certain he will not be forgotten.

A job well done, Mr. Archibald and thanks.

Dear Crystal and Family

When we opened the Winston-Salem Journal this morning and saw Al's picture and obituary, the emotion in the room was palpable. We were incredulous, not wanting to believe what we read. I have been thinking about him for the past week, with every intention of making the usual January call to catch up on family news and inquire about his health. I regret that I waited too long.

Since our first meeting years ago, I have always considered Al as one of my closest friends. In fact, he was more than a friend. He was a confidant, and I shall always cherish the time I spent with him. It was an honor to have known him. Indeed, the untold number of his friends was a testiment to the kind of man he was.

As a husband, father, grandfather, coach, educator, and friend Al was a gaint of a man. He has given us a beaufiful legacy, a blessing for which we are grateful. We join with you in your grief and in the celebration of Al's life.

Our love to the entire family.
