Allison Atkins Obituary

ATKINS WINSTON-SALEM - "I pray when my body ceaseth to do me function that those who truly love me will have the courage to let go of me so that I may be truly well and with my Lord." Benjamin Franklin 1789 Mr. Allison Ray ('A' Ray) Atkins, 71, passed away Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011. Memorial will be Lewisville UMC, 6290 Shallowford Rd. at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 8. 'A' Ray offered his unconditional love, kind-spirit and understanding demeanor wherever he met you on his journey. He believed and lived his life in harmony with all of God's creations. He continuously forgave and asked for forgiveness to keep his hands and heart clean as God has taught us to be ready for his day. He maintained the most positive approach to life's circumstances while keeping busy helping others, playing golf, singing and performing dramatic presentations at the W-S Little Theatre. As a young man he worked for R.J.R. as a lab technician. After that he moved on to LA Reynolds Company. He also worked at the Central YMCA as the Metropolitan Properties Supervisor. He later purchased Lewisville Paving Company and served this community for over twenty years. Through his business he was able to minister to countless people through fellowship and sharing his unconditional love. 'A' Ray had a beautiful voice and loved singing with the Carolina Praise Choir and the SPEBS Barber Shop Choir. He often gathered with those who shared his faith in God at Lewisville UMC, First Assembly of God (Music of Performing Arts), Calvary Baptist Church and the Pine Grove UMC. He served untiringly in the Men's Ministries, Marriage and Family Ministries, and met with a Men's Accountability Group of five at First Assembly each Saturday morning to pray and encourage others in their faith. 'A' Ray was a tremendous athlete and golfer, he played and participated in many golf functions during his adult life, then taught the fundamentals of golf at Forsyth Tech. Moreover, while attending Catawba College he played football on a scholarship. Although, he is absent from our presence, we are consoled through the word of God that he is present with the Lord. 'A' Ray was born in Forsyth County to the late Quinton Atkins and Mary Seal Atkins on March 21, 1939. He graduated from Southwest HS in 1957 and was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harold Atkins. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Suzy Atkins; his children, Allison Anderson (Jeff), Ashley Branch, Brad Atkins (Melissa), Britt Atkins (Jecca); his step-children; Lisa Santos (Marcello), Charles Shouse and Jim Johnston; grandchildren: Garrett Branch, Joshua Atkins, Matthew Atkins, Addison Branch, Peyton Anderson, Luke Atkins, Elijah Atkins and Tanner Atkins; two special pets, Heidi and Bambi; his siblings, Aileen Miller, Jeanette Cook, Edna Earl Long, David (Carol) Atkins & Daniel Atkins (Carol). He also leaves many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and church families. Memorials may be sent to the KBR Hospice, 101 Hospice Lane, W-S, NC 27103. We, would like to express our love and gratitude to the wonderful staff for the care shown to our family at Forsyth Memorial (9th Flr. Oncology) and KBR Hospice Palliative CareCenter.

I am truly sorry for your loss, but know that Ray is now in peace and in the presence of our Lord. I wish I had been able to visit with him when I came by, or that I had made it back another day. My heart is heavy for our loss here on earth, but look forward to hearing him sing once again when we all make it to that wonderful place. Much love and prayers to all the family.

Ashley & Allison,

As I sit here... far away in Connecticut, I can not help but remember all the times when I was over at your house when we were neighbors and friends growing up. Your Dad was always outside working, talking with you guys, singing and laughing!! He had such a great smile, and loved the four of you kids so much. I hope that as the days move forward....each one will become easier with time, but as a "Daddy's Girl" myself, I am sure there will be tough days as well. Just remember what a great man he was, how many lives he touched, and just how blessed the two of you are to call him "Dad". All my love, thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of your wonderful family.

We only learned of Ray's illness last week and regret that our part of the Atkins family hasn't done a better job of keeping in touch over the years. What a sweet spirit Ray had. I never saw him when he wasn't smiling. I know you are grieving but rejoicing also to know that he is now with his Lord. Love, Eddie Atkins and Sandra Atkins Jones

We, including our dear Sally, were blessed to share the inspiring courage and love of the Atkins Family at FMC 9th Oncology and KBR Hospice Home as both our families traveled similar paths. Sally would have wanted a representative at your service tonight but she was having ups and downs through the day that kept us near KBR.
You are always leaving us behind and although we are surrounded by wonderful people, it's not the same without the Atkins Family nearby.
Certainly the memorial celebration tonight will refresh and inspire many wonderful memories now and in the future about a life well lived.
May God continue to bless the Atkins Family as they carry forward on this earth the spirit of Ray left in them. May we all find peace knowing Ray will be among the greeters when Sally enters the better place that has been prepared for them.
The Atkins Family is in our hearts and minds.
With love and respect,
The DeRamus Family

I now live in Atlanta but grew up in Lewisville and attended Lewisville UMC. I will always fondly remember Ray Atkins whom I sang together with in the church choir. I remember his kindness, enthusiasm, talent and handsome good looks. His presence made it more fun for me, as a high school teen, to sing in our church choir when it wasn't necessarily the "cool" thing to do. Doing things with Ray made the activity fun. My deep sympathies are extended to the family on the loss of such a fine man. You are in my prayers.

Ray Atkins was looked up to and admired by virtually everyone who ever knew him. We should all aspire to lead the kind of life he did--with a kind word and a smile for everyone. A truly inspiring individual.

To the Family, especially Jeanette and Sonja:

I was fortunate to meet and sing with Ray at Bixby Presbyterian Church. Ray witnessed to our congregation about his faith and love for the Lord. We will certainly miss this good Christian man and his wonderful voice, but we also know that Ray is now at home in God's hands...a much better place. I pray that one day I will be able to sing again with Ray in heaven's choir. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Suzy and Family, I am so sorry to hear of Ray's passing. He was such a good friend to Neal and me. I am so glad that Ray got over here to see Neal before Neal passed away. They had a very good visit together. Suzy, you and the kids are now on a journey that I do not wish upon anyone. This is the hardest journey I have ever tried to travel. I miss my Neal so much, there are no words to express the feeling. I will keep you and the kids in my thoughts and prayers. Ray will forever be remembered for his kindness.

I have memories of Ray from my childhood and later years and always considered him a very caring person with a wonderful sense of humor. I feel blessed to have known him. He was always so kind to my family.

My sympathy to his entire family. Such peace comes in knowing Ray knew where his eternal home would be.

My heart goes out to Allison, Ashley, Brad, Britt and the rest of your family of whom I have not met. I have been encouraged (while saddened at the same time for your loss) by Brad's updates on FaceBook. It is obvious that the Lord has been Ray's and all of your strength through this heartbreaking time. I have certainly experienced this truth (God's power is made perfect though weakness) in many of the similar tragedies and losses in our family. While encouraging, it is still a great loss to each of you and I am praying for you to be comforted with the peace, love, grace and mercy extended to you through Christ and manifested through others who love and care for you. Love in Christ, Mike Sears

Dear Suzy and all of the Family of Ray, I am so so sad that Ray left us, but, we all know exactly where he is and HOW he is now. I never saw Ray without a smile and glow on his face, even when he was battling the sickness that took him home. He was always there as a friend with a kind and good word, spoken sincerely from his heart. Oh, we shall miss Ray. He was such an inspiration to so so many of us. I share your loss so. Yours in Christ's Love, Milton Crotts

In this time of your loss.
We lift you up in prayer.
We pray that in your sorrow.
You’ll find that God is there.
And though we can’t be with you.
You’re in our thoughts each day.
For we will always remember you.
When we kneel to pray.
In Jesus Name.
