Berdeen Witherspoon Obituary

Berdeen Scales Witherspoon, 73, of 2817 Rowell St., formerly of 3450 Healy Drive, Apt. 2-F, peacefully completed her journey on Aug. 25, 2003, at home. She was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Winston-Salem to George and Martha Love Scales. She was a graduate of Atkins High School, class of 1948. She was a faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church until her health began to fail. She was active in many ministries, serving in various positions. She was also a member of the Stokes Avenue Community Club and assisted with the food bank and services at Healy Towers. She was married to Herman Witherspoon, who preceded her in death in 1962. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Wilbert Eugene Scales; and two sisters, Flora Etta and Etta Mae Scales. Berdeen is survived by her devoted nephew, Orlando Scales and wife, Bobbie; five great-nephews, Orlando Jr., Daryl (Vivian) Scales, Daryl Bannister, Kelvin Scales and Dykar Scales; three great-nieces, Sonya (James) McKeever, Karen Wideman, and Kelli (Daryl) Simons; 19 great-great-nephews and nieces, including D.J., her "helper," and Kellik, her "servant;" a devoted cousin, James Johnson; other cousins, Eva Payne, Helen Eaton, Ruby Wilds, James (Johnnie) Scales, Donald (Odessa) Scales, all of Winston-Salem, and Thomas (Sharon) Scales of Jersey City, N.J.; and a devoted goddaughter, Peggy Campbell. Berdeen was blessed to have longtime devoted friends: her very best friend, Naomi Anderson of Bear, Del., Maggie Campbell, Tereatha Tribble, Shirley Armstrong and Josephine Caldwell. She leaves to cherish her memory also her Beulah Baptist Church family; and other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Beulah Baptist Church, with Pastor L. Bruce Ford officiating. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. The family gives special thanks to all who made her final days comfortable. (Russell)
