Birdie Lee Hill Vaughn, affectionately called "Doll," was the youngest of four children born to the late John M. and Maggie Goodwin Hill. She peacefully departed this life to be with her heavenly Father on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004. She was born Nov. 27, 1907, in Rock Hill, S.C. She attended elementary school at the departments of Emmett Scott School and Clinton College. She then graduated from high school at Friendship College in Rock Hill. Birdie continued her education by earning a bachelor of arts degree from Bennett College in Greensboro, where she majored in English and history. She also earned a master of science degree in education from N.C. A&T State University. After college, Birdie moved to Winston-Salem and was hired as an English teacher at Atkins High School. She remained a teacher there for 35 years. She was then transferred to North Forsyth High School, where she retired after six years. After retirement, Birdie taught communications at Winston-Salem State University for two years. Birdie was an active member of First Baptist Church for as long as her health permitted. She served on the board of Christian education and was a Sunday school teacher and a Girl Scout adviser and troop leader. She was also past president of the Women's Progressive Club and was a member of First Baptist Church's Home and Foreign Missionary Group, the Deborah Missionary Group and the Josie White Simons Auxiliary. Birdie was a charter member of the Winston-Salem Alumnae chapter of Bennett College. She served in numerous positions which included pre-sident and college recruiter. Birdie valued education and loved Bennett College very much. Birdie was also a proud Golden Life Member of the Winston-Salem Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta So-rority, Inc. While living on Shadymount Avenue in Winston-Salem, Birdie was active in the Community Club as well as other aspects of neighborhood life. In the Community Club, she served as financial secretary. Birdie also served as a walking collector for the Heart Fund and March of Dimes. Birdie was married to the late George Henry Vaughn for 59 years. She leaves several family members and friends to cherish her memory including a daughter, Clementine Vaughn Mauney; two grandchildren, Jeannine Vaughn Mau-ney and Melvin Douglass Mauney II, all of Pfafftown; a nephew, Dr. Robert Bowser Jr. and wife, Yvonne, of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Vaughn of Hebron, Md.; her cousins, Ernestine Cathcarth and Josie Lee Shir-ley and husband, Larry, of Winston-Salem; and numerous other family members and friends. The funeral service will be held at noon today, Jan. 28, at the First Baptist Church, 700 N. Highland Ave., with the Rev. Wendell A. Johnson, Pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to noon today at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Bennett College Scholarship Fund, 3565 Grandview Club Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040, in memory of Birdie Lee Hill Vaughn. (Hooper)
