Brian McAnulty Obituary

KERNERSVILLE - Master Sgt. Brian P. McAnulty, 39, originally of Vicksburg, Miss., died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, when the CH-53 helicopter he was riding in crashed just after takeoff in Al Anbar province in Iraq. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif. A native of Hartford, Conn., he was born Oct. 16, 1967. He moved to Vicksburg, in 1978. He graduated from Warren High School in 1985 and enlisted in the Marine Corps in April of 1988. Following graduation from boot camp at MCRD, Parris Island, S.C., he was assigned to the School of Infantry in Camp Lejeune for training as an infantryman. His first assignment was to the Marine Corps Security Force Battalion in Norfolk, Va., for service aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). In 1991, he was then assigned to the Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team Company in Norfolk, Va. In 1992, Master Sgt. McAnulty was selected for service with Marine Security Guard Battalion. Later, he was assigned to Marine Security Guard Detachments in Asuncion, Paraguay; Seoul, South Korea; and Budapest, Hungary. In 1996, he executed orders to 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, Calif., for duty with 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines. During that same assignment, he deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/4 from November 1998 to April 1999 as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. In 2001, Master Sgt. McAnulty was reassigned to the Marine security guard battalion and trained to serve in the coveted position of detachment commander. He commanded Marine security guard detachments at U.S. embassies in war-torn Bujumbura, Burundi, and in the dangerous city of Bogota, Colombia. After excelling as a detachment commander and being named "Detachment of the Year" in South America, he was selected to serve as an instructor/adviser at the Marine Security Guard school in Quantico, Va., from April 2004 to April 2006. Weeks prior to this assignment however, during civil unrest in Haiti, his expertise in embassy security and low-intensity conflict was needed; he was sent to the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to ensure the readiness of the embassy's Marine detachment and provide tactical advice to security personnel. After assuming the duties of instructor at the Marine Security Guard Battalion Headquarters in Quantico, he revamped the weapons training for Marine security guard battalion and was directly responsible for improving the overall marksmanship capability of Marine guards, which proved vital in the battalion's role in the global war on terrorism. In conjunction with teaching duties, he continued an active security role within the Marine security guard battalion. In December 2004, when terrorists attacked the U.S. Consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Master Sgt. McAnulty was immediately sent in to provide extra security and provide tactical and personal guidance to the Marines. In March 2006, he was transferred to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division in Twentynine Palms, Calif., and served as the company gunnery sergeant for Weapons Company and later as the operations chief. He deployed to Iraq with the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines for combat operations in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His many awards include Navy And Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Gold Star), Navy And Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with three Gold Stars), Navy Unit Commendation (with Bronze Star), Navy Meritorious Commendation Medal (with three Bronze Stars), Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (with four Bronze Stars), National Defense Service Medal (with a Bronze Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (5th Award), Navy And Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Marine Security Guard Ribbon (3rd Award), Expert Pistol (6th Award), And Expert Rifle (9th Award). Brian was a passionate Marine who put the needs of others before his own. He was described by his fellow Marines and peers as loyal, unselfish, kind, patriotic and brave. He had traveled the world with the Marine Corps and soaked up the local cultures and languages. He also loved soccer and military history, and deeply loved his family. Survivors include his parents, Robert and Frances McAnulty; a brother and sister-in-law, Brett and Stacy McAnulty; and his beloved nieces, Cora and Lily, all of Kernersville; and his beloved family with the U.S. Marine Corps. Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 19 at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with full Military honors will follow in Mount Gur Cemetery. The family will visit with friends at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday. Online condolences may be sent to the McAnulty family at www.Pierce-JeffersonFuneralService.com. MSGT. You were my first real mentor, you were wild and you always had the utmost confidence in the way you conducted yourself. I have never been more sad in my life than being there on that day with you and getting the news. Worst day of my life. But please understand, I live every day in honor of you and all of our fallen. I love you brother. Until Valhalla.

Brian was my roommate at FAST Co.in 1991 and we became very close, almost immediately when he checked. He was someone I could always count on... We shared the same interests in music and we had great times staying out way too late in VA Beach!

Brian was a Stoic. I recall he had injured his back FAST roping, but the Docs said they could not find anything, so he was placed back on active duty. Brian had unbelievabl pain for an extended period of time and finally was able to get another opinion who finally identified he had a broken back!! Brian stepped up big time, gritted his teeth and pushed through all of what we were doing with a broken back for a very long time. It was crazy...

Brian was true leader as he lead himself first as a humble man and respected others. He possessed a particular trait or quality the precedes and supercedes all other leadership characteristics, in that, he had a genuine interest in being their for people. He was the type of person you want to serve with. He was genunine.

I think about Brian all the time and my children all know who Brian was and what a great person he was. I am blessed to have been able to serve with Brian at FAST Co. He has and will continue to be missed by many.

God Bless,

Patrick Berryessa

To the family of MSgt McAnult, I had the distinct honor to serve with Brian in 2/4. As I sit here and reminisce about my time with Brian I struggle to find the right words that may help to ease your pain or comfort you in some way. Brain was by far the greatest Marine that I had the pleasure to serve along side. He made the good times great and the bad times tolerable. I had the fortunate opportunity to speak with him prior to his deployment and wish I would have thanked him for all his mentorship over the years. Not a day that goes by that my heart doesn't go out to you and your family. If you ever need anything please don't hesitate to reach out.

P.S. Thanks for the great memories Brother, I sure do miss you!

Dear Mcanulty Family, I served with Brian while with FAST Company, 2nd Platoon, MCSF BN in Norfolk, VA. I just learned of his passing. Brian was a Corporal at the time and I always considered him a close friend and as others have said, someone you could count on no matter what the circumstance. He always had a positive outlook and looked for the best in everything. He was quick with a laugh ( I will never forget the halloween bee suit when he had his broken back), dependable, honest, a leader, and a true Marines Marine. It is an honor to have served beside your son. Semper Fi.

Dear McNaulty Family,
I learned of Brian's passing last year. I am truly sorry for your loss. I had the honor of serving with him as a young CPL. He was my team leader and then later squad leader. The thing I remember most about him was that he always had a huge smile on his face. It was an absolute pleasure serving with him. I too remember that Halloween he dressed up as a bumble bee when he had broken his back.
The reason I came looking for you is because it has been brought to my attention that another Fast Co. Friend of mine has a video of Brian that he would like you to have. We have a closed group on Facebook if you would like to join "Fast Company 2nd Plt" or email me at [email protected] and I will put you in contact with Tommy Williford. He has the video.

I got to know Brian when he was a Marine Security Guard in Budapest, and then saw him again when he was the MSG Detachment Commander in Bujumbura, Burundi. I was always impressed by what a smart, incredibly funny and supremely decent guy he was. No matter what was going on, he always had a smile on his face and he kept other people's spirits high. After his death, I learned that some of the MSGs I've since worked with were trained by him, and they held him in very high regard, as they should. He is sorely missed. I am lucky to have had the chance to know him.

I met Brian when I was in college in Norfolk, VA. He and a group of his marine buddies would spend a lot of time with my group of friends. I served with MSGT Brian McAnulty (then a Gunny) in Bujumbura Burundi (The Buj). He was a Marine's Marine. His every waking hour was dedicated to the safety of the American citizens in Bujumbura. Even when they weren't cooperative, he did his duty and ensured that they were safe and had a plan of action for emergencies. He put American lives as a priority over ruffling feathers. During his tour in Bujumbura, the Americans were in the best hands possible. He was passionate about his duties. He was serious about his job, but he kept the Marines laughing, and we made the best of our time in Bujumbura. He was always encouraging us Marines to make the best of our time overseas, and to see the sites, go places, and experience things. I don't think there are many who went as many places, and experienced as many things as he did in his 39 years. He was a good man, and the Marine Corps lost a good Marine.

I served with Sgt. Mack at 2/4 81's together. I remember him as being an overall good guy with a great sense of humor. Rest in peace and thank you for serving our country.

Brian and I went to Warren Central together. I graduated in 1987. Although we weren't really friends, we knew each other. In 2000, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, I walked into the Staff NCO berthing on the USS Essex (31st MEU) and bumped into SSgt Mcanulty. We couldn't believe it. We hadn't seen each other in over 15 years and neither of us knew the other had joined the Marine Corps. We hung out and talked a few times throughout the remainder of our float. I was just home in July and was telling some friends from high school the same story and they told me about Brian's passing. I had no idea. Brian was a great guy and a lot of fun to be around. It's no wonder he was loved so much by his Marines. Semper Fi Brian.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Brian and I were peers in the late 90s and although we served in different battalions of 5th Marine Regiment, we worked in a very close circle of infantry SNCOs. We also attended SAWIC school together in Quantico as SSgts. I genuinely liked and respected this Marine. Dear family and friends of Brian McAnulty,
I wish to express my condolences for your loss. I knew then Gunnery Sergeant McAnulty briefly during his short attachment to my MSG det in Port au Prince, Haiti. He was sent in (from Bogata) as a liason for our detachment and a F.A.S.T. team that was brought in. I remember his sence of humor and easy going spirit in the midst of all the chaos of the time. He was a great Marine. I'm sorry for your loss.

It has taken a while for me to find the words that needed to be said about MSgt McAnulty. I knew MSgt from MSG school. I met him when I was a PFC and worked with him for 2 1/2 years he even pinned me to Corporal. I spent many late nights and long days working with MSgt. Anytime that I had a problem he was there for me. I spent countless hours out in "our" smoke pit talking about life and how to make things better. The one thing that I will always remember about MSgt McAnulty is that he did not only treat me as a Marine but as a Man. I have become the Marine that I am today because of him. A lot of what he taught me I still use today on my Marines. He used to tell me, "Make a Marine laugh and he will follow you to combat, take care of that same Marine and you will have a friend for life." MSgt thank you for all you have done for me and my wife Aimee, you will never be forgotten and your leadership will live on in me. Semper Laughing!

I served with Brian in weapons company 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, 81mm platoon. Brian was a great guy. He had a great sense of humor. He could always make you laugh. I remember I was on a Marine of the Quarter board and Brian (then a Staff Sergeant) asked me to name all of the M203 rounds (40mm grenade), I named all the rounds including the buckshot round. He looked at me and said," what are you just making up your own rounds now." The look he had on his face and the way he said it was hilarious. Everyone started laughing. Thats how I remember him. I extend my condolences to Brian's family. He will be missed by everyone. Semper Fi Brian!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I met Brian when we served together at Weapons Company 2/4 Dragons & Trailers during the period 1998-2001.

Brian McAnulty was one of the most intelligent, people I've ever met. He could have done anything in this life, and he chose to serve as a US Marine. He above all people I have ever met, epitomized the citizen soldier.

I remember Brian as a seeker of knowledge, who was always willing to give of his time and experience. He was a decent and honorable gentleman.

During our time at 2/4, my wife Jennifer and I had the opportunity to spend time socially with Brian on a number of occasions. She too was impressed by what a kind, likable man he was. He had a great sense of humor, and a joi de vivre that was quite contagious.

I am out of the Marine Corps now, and Jennifer & I have a son of our own. I will remember Brian to my son Nicholas as an example of what a leader of men should be.

I was just informed about Brians passing. What is great is that the picture on this website is the same picture I remember him as, smiling. The man was always smiling. I love it. I served with Brian for about two years in WPNS 2/4 81mm Mortar Platoon. I have a picture of him trying to eat a spider. It was so huge it took up a whole spoon! What a legacy that he has left behind. Some people spend an entire life time trying to accomplish a feat, he did it without trying. Reviewing all the statements about him, it seems he has touched more people than most humans dream of. He served proudly and he will be truly missed. Semper Fi "Top". The Marines lost a true warrior that day. One day we will meet at heavens gates where I will relieve you and take over your guard. Until then, Marines forever.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I lost my son, Sgt. Jason W. Vaughn, on 10 May 2007 in Iraq. I always felt sorrow for every fallen soldier and their families before I lost my son; now I know the agonizing pain each family goes through. It's amazing how our worlds have come to a crashing halt, but everything else keeps going on. I am so sorry. May God bless you!

I remember Master Sgt. McAnulty when he was still a Staff Sgt with 2/4 weapons. He would say the craziest things that would put a smile on everyone face. Not once do I remember him raising his voice in anger. My last thing I remember of Staff Sgt. McAnulty was him trying to nurse a baby kangaroo rat back to health... I know its strange to think of him this way but it was the kindness of his heart and ways that made him stand out from the rest. The world is a much sadder place without him.

Man....I can remember almost two years ago when I meet Gunny McAnulty at MSG school. He was the most funniest instructor at school that kept my head up and looking towards the postive side. It was always a cheesburger or a embassy story. I remember the one he told my class about the rats/mice in the Embassy he was at and how his MSG's used OC Spray everywhere...pretty hilarious. When I heard about what had happen it really touched my heart. I had to go through my MSG pictures to recap some great moments and I came across a picture of myself and Gunny McAnulty on the range in front of my Shotgun target after I finally passed with his help and encouraging words. Gunny McAnulty was an astonishing Marine. He knew how to be at any giving moment. My condolences go out to him, his family, and the Marine Corps. A great man was lost on earth, but found in heaven.

I just wanted to say first and foremost, my heart and prayers go out to his family, loved ones, and anyone who knew him. He was a great man with a tremendous sense of humor. He taught me that I could still be myself and that it was alright to smile on MSG. You could be the defender of an American Consulate and still keep your smile on your face staring at the face of adversity. He always looked at the brighter, more positive side to life. The glass was always half full to him. I know you are enjoying yourself making everyone in heaven laugh. God Bless and Semper Fi.

His picture is one of the few that can bring a smile and a tear to my face at the same time. MSgt “Mac” like we called him, was my instructor and mentor at Marine Security Guard School. He had his own spin to everything, in and out of the classroom. Those who served with him should know and feel grateful of having served with him. I know I do. You should know the huge impact his death had on the whole MSG program all over the world! Marines post pictures on “Myspace” passed around stories via email. I cant avoid getting choked up as I write this. He was all about getting the job done then go getting a cheeseburger. MSG’s know him as “tito” the Colombian guard that always has cookies. “you wanna kooki" he would say in his Spanish accent. He always found a way to test and push the marines to the potential he knew we had. Even in the face of adversity he never flinched I admire him and even now he still influences me. Well MSgt Mac until we meet again. Then we can eat all the cheeseburgers.

I had the pleasure of being one of the Marines in then SSgt McAnulty's detachment, 3-01, at Marine Security Guard school. He really saved my butt one time when I acted out of line. Anyone who knows the school knows how easy one can fail there. He saved me and my career. I'll always remember him how he is in that picture. The Marine Corps is generally not a "pleasant" organization in the typical sense. However, he was one of those who could get the job done without making it any harder than it needed to be and smiling through it all. My condolences to all who knew him. I was hoping that the war would end before anyone I knew fell in it, and I was especially sad to see who ended my dream.

I was so sad to read of Brian's death in the Clarion Ledger. Not a Christmas has passed in more than 20 years, that I do not think about Brian and Dennis and the tragic car accident that took Dennis' life. Brian and I had been going out for about a month when the wreck occurred. I was 15. They had left me at a friends' house about an hour before it happened. The events of that Christmas Eve eve changed all of us.

I remember Brian as he was - laughing, quick with a joke and a kind word. He was always kind, even during that season of immense personal sadness. I lost touch with Brett and Brian shortly after that, but I knew that Brian had joined the Marines. I'm so glad that he was living his life's calling. The news of his untimely death was such a shock. I know that those who called him Friend and Loved-one feel a great void. My sincere sympathies on the loss of this honorable man.

I was sitting next to brian when the helicopter crashed. He was the stick leader and I was next in charge. Last thing that I remember before the accident was entering the helo after our last practice landing and Brian looking at me and smiling and saying that was awesome. What a great man brian was.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. McAnulty:
I only served with Master Sergeant Brian P. McAnulty for two short months (January and February 2003) while assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá Colombia. Nevertheless Master Sergeant Brian P. McAnulty was one of two detachment commanders I served under that had a great impact and influence on my Marine Corps career. If your son was able to impact my Marine Corps career in two short months it’s hard to imagine just how many other Marines were positively influenced by his presence during his eighteen years of service.

To the family of MSgt McAnult,
I want to send my heartfelt condolences in the passing of this great man. I had the honor of working with him during a training operation before this deployment and his personality and energy, just made me like him and respect him. With him being a senior rank, he never believed in that anything was beneath him when it came to taking care of his fellow Marines. He was always doing anything and everything he could to help others do their job. In the time off, we would sit there and talk about music from our generation, basically a name that tune kind of a thing. I found out about this today and I feel sorry for the passing, but am happy that I had a chance to get to know him and work with him. It was an honor and a pleasure. He will be missed.

I also served with Master Sgt. McAnulty back in WPNS 2/4. Everything people have said of him here hits the nail on the head. He taught me more about being a Marine, a leader, and a man than anybody else. In every leadership position Ive been in since I have known him, I have tried to model my actions after his. Finding out about his passing has hit home harder than I ever imagined. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, and to everyone that had the honor to know him.

To the family of Master Sgt. Brian McAnulty;

I am so sorry for your loss of this precious man. My heart breaks for you all - and I just wanted you to know that we are thinking and praying for you all!

My son knew Master Sgt. - was on board the helicopter when it crashed. He told me he stayed by his side until help arrived.

I also got a letter from my son yesterday - and he wrote about his Master Sgt. He had such wonderful things to say about him - what a wonderful sense of humor he had - how easy he was to talk to, and what a friend he was to all who knew him.

He is missed by all of the Marines who served with him.

I just wanted you to know what my son said - although I know without any doubts that you know how wonderful is was. He is a hero to so many!

Now - he is an angel in heaven looking over all of us. That is a comfort to me knowing he is watching over my son - and all the other Marines who are still in Iraq.

I hope and pray that you will feel the love that is coming from all over the world for your precious Brian.

God bless you all!

“Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

I had the privilege of serving with Master Sergeant McAnulty over the last six months. He and I and his Company Commander, Captain Greg Gordon worked closely together in the Battalion's Fire Support Coordination Center during pre-deployment training in 29 Palms. I also spent some time with him on the roads and in the villages of Western Iraq. Myself being a pilot stationed in an Infantry Battalion (a little out of my element), "Top" always looked out for me and made sure I was taken care of. I would like to share my opinions of "Top" to all who care to read this. He was a true leader of Marines. He put the welfare of his Marines (both Officer and Enlisted) above all else. He led by example. He was always willing to help a fellow Marine or Sailor with any problem. He was always in good spirits, which ultimately lifted the spirits of those around him. You could not get him to stop talking about Investing or AK-47s. I once accidentally asked him a question about one of the AK-47s we had confiscated earlier in the day. Four hours later he stopped talking. Captain Gordon later said to me "you shouldn't have asked...once he gets going, you can't stop him". He was one of those people who just stood out. You couldn't help but like him. He represented everything that was right about the Marine Corps. The picture that is posted on this page is a true representation of the way he lived: always with a smile on his face. He loved his Country, he loved his Marines. He is a true patriot. He is a great loss to Weapons Company, 3d Battalion, 4th Marines, the Unites States Marine Corps and this country as a whole. He is irreplaceable. He will be missed. Semper Fidelis Top.
