Charlotte Ludlum Obituary

LUDLUM Charlotte H. Ludlum, 98, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Ludlum was born in 1910 to the late Jesse and Nancy Jane Huntley of the Bat Cave community in Henderson County. She was a graduate of Edneyville High School and Cecil' s Business College in Asheville. In 1939, while serving as church secretary at First Baptist Church, Asheville, she married the Rev. Lewis E. Ludlum. After serving in positions in Carolina Beach and Shelby, the Ludlums moved to Winston-Salem in 1950 where Lewis served as director of Missions for Pilot Mountain Baptist Association. During 68 years as a member of First Baptist Church, Charlotte served in many leadership positions including nursery Sunday school teacher, director of Children' s Work, nursery coordinator, Woman' s Missionary Union president and Church Flower Committee. In the community, she was active in Granville Parent-Teacher Association and Shamrock Garden Club, and she served as vice chairman of the Forsyth County Republican Party. When in her 60s, she became a licensed real-estate agent specializing in residential properties. She worked first for Ferrell Realty and later for Helms-Parish Properties. Since 1992, she had been a resident of Brookridge Retirement Community. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; a sister, Catherine Huntley Dewitte of Bat Cave; and three brothers, the Rev. William C. Huntley of Hendersonville; Thomas David Huntley of Hendersonville; and George W. Huntley, of Bat Cave. She is survived by two children, W. Douglas Ludlum of Charleston, S.C., and Rebecca (John) Anne Speas of Loudon, Tenn.; three grandchildren, David J. (Jenny) Speas of Columbus, Ohio; Robert L. (Daphne) Speas of Knoxville, Tenn.; and the Rev. Nancy J. (John) Speas-Hill of Louisville, Ky.; four great-grandchildren, Donald and Taylor Speas of Columbus; Riley and Emma Speas of Knoxville; two sisters, Lillian Curtis of Bat Cave and Mollie Lefteris of High Point; and three brothers, the Rev. Ted R. Huntley of Pulaski, Tenn.; the Rev. John J. (Jessie) of Arden; and the Rev. Wade H. (Cleo) Huntley of Rutherfordton. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, March 15, in Reich Chapel of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem at Fifth and Spruce Streets, with Dr. Ray W. Benfield officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Brookridge Retirement Community, 1199 Hayes Forest Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106, or a charity of the donor' s choice.
