David completed his studies at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. Following graduation, David served in the Coast Guard and later Coast Guard Reserve. David was very proud of being recognized as "Best Shipmate" in 1962 on the Cutter to which he was assigned during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
David spent the first 30 years of his work career in the garbage industry. David began working with Sanitary Container Service in Winston-Salem and later founded their branch in Charlotte, North Carolina. He worked with Browning Ferris Industries (BFI) and spent the last decade in the industry serving as Vice President of Container Corporation of the Carolinas, retiring in 1992. David liked to say he had his doctorate degree in "Garbology." David was respected by his peers in the industry and was often referred to as one of "Grandfathers of Garbage" in the Southeastern United States. David was a long time member of the Charlotte Rotary Club where he was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions in Rotary. David also helped start and became the first president of the Charlotte Apartment Association. David was a board member of Whitney Associates in Winston-Salem for many years.
Upon his retirement from the garbage industry, David began a second career in real estate becoming a broker in both North and South Carolina. David worked for several years with Grand Strand Realty in Cherry Grove, North Myrtle Beach until his health started to decline.
In 1965, David married Ann Whitney and they were blessed with the birth of two children Elizabeth (Buffy) and David Jr. As a father, David served as a Cub Scout leader, coached Dixie Youth Baseball and chaperoned many activities his children were involved in throughout their lives. He never missed a dance or piano recital, baseball or soccer game, parent teacher conference or pediatrician appointment.
David was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved father in law, Hoyt Snider Whitney.
David is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann Whitney, a daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Whitney Marcus Long (Buffy) and her husband Mark Holladay Long and their daughter, Whitney Crosby Holladay Long ("Crosberry"); a son, The Rev. "Big Daddy" as David was called will be greatly missed. David was known for his dry wit and great sense of humor. A very positive person throughout his life, David's loving memory will be a blessing to those who knew him.
