David Summers Obituary

SUMMERS David Lee Summers, 61, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, peacefully at home, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Dec. 6, 1946, in Tyrone, Pa., the son of the late John Thomas Summers and Margaret Ruth Bressler Summers. David grew up in Tyrone where he was very active in Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. David had a lifelong interest in hunting and remained active in the Pennington Hunting Club in Warrior' s Mark, Pa. He also had a deep love for Ocean Isle Beach where he was especially happy. He was an avid gardener, frequently sharing his bounty with friends. After serving in the U.S. Army, David spent 30 years in the TV broadcast industry, including 10 years at WXII in Winston-Salem. David exemplified the meaning of a good neighbor and a generous and true friend. One of his proudest achievements was the establishment of the Faulkenberry Summers Scholarship Fund with his wife, Myra, at High Point University, to provide opportunities for young scholars who might not otherwise be able to attend college. His brother, John, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Myra Faulkenberry Summers; his son, David Lee Summers Jr. (Amy), and their children, Brooke Elizabeth and Clay Matthew; and his sister, Roberta Miller (Les). He also leaves five nieces and nephews. David leaves two special members of the family, Luce and Beau. David was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where a memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, in the chapel, with the Rev. Michael Brown officiating. A visitation will be held at the home after the service. Memorials may be made to the Faulkenberry Summers Scholarship Fund, c/o Dr. Don Scarborough, Box 3393, High Point University, High Point, NC 27262, or The Buddy Fund, c/o Ard-Vista Animal Hospital.

I worked with Dave at WTAJ way back in the late 70's. Still remember his smile and laugh to this day.
So sorry to learn of his illness and that he has left us.

At TV-10, Dave and I were "office neighbors". The dividing wall was short, like a cubicle. So Dave and I would throw things at each other over the wall when we would least expected it. There was never a dull moment with Dave. He was a pleasure to work with and part of the "cool people" at the station.
I truly wish that done of us would ever die. It's so sad.

Dear Summers Family,
I had the pleasure of working with Dave in Altoona and Winston-Salem.
It was Dave and Meyer Davis that pulled me from WTAJ to WXII. Dave told be about an opening in Fort Wayne, Indiana and I'm still here today. I'm honored to say I knew
Dave Summers and will remember
him a good man, crazy nut and warm
person. (He still is but he's doing it someplace else waiting for us to join him.)
God Bless!

What a sad moment when I read of Dave's death in the Tyrone Herald. I had the honor and pleasure of working with Dave at WTAJ-TV 10 in Altoona, PA. He could always brighten your day with his smile or some crazy story! He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
